U.S. Counties Losing Bank Branches Despite Rising Deposits
245 U.S. counties had fewer bank branches and higher deposits
New York County recorded the largest net decline among qualifying counties: 502 physical full-service branches in June 2025 versus 489 in June 2026. Deposits reported in the county rose 7.70% to $1.911 trillion over the same period.
Across 245 counties and county equivalents, the number of physical full-service branches fell from 20,030 to 19,623 — a net decline of 407. FDIC-reported deposits across all office types in those counties rose 7.28%, from $7.802 trillion to $8.370 trillion. The ratio of deposits to physical branches increased 9.51%.
Source: FDIC Summary of Deposits. Branch counts cover physical full-service offices (service types 11 and 12). Deposit totals cover all FDIC office types, including home banking.
Survey dates: June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026. Data retrieved October 30, 2026.
How many counties had both fewer branches and more deposits?
Of 3,105 county areas matched between the two FDIC surveys, 3,102 had at least one physical full-service branch in each year and positive deposits in 2025. A total of 389 recorded a net branch decline. Deposits also increased in 245 of those counties (62.98%). In the other 144, deposits were flat or lower.
These figures compare the number of branches at two reporting dates; they do not count confirmed closure events. Home-banking offices (FDIC type 13) are excluded. For example, Boone County, Missouri, went from 70 to 59 offices of all types but still had 57 physical full-service branches in both years. It therefore does not qualify.
Across the 50 states and Washington, DC, physical full-service branches declined from 73,321 to 73,154, a net loss of 167. The 245 counties in this study lost 407 branches on a net basis; gains in other counties offset some of those losses.
The 10 largest net declines in physical bank branches
Each county below had fewer physical full-service branches and more deposits recorded across its FDIC office types. Counties with equal net losses are ordered by their percentage decline and then by FIPS code.

The 20 largest net branch declines
New York County leads with 13 fewer branches, followed by San Francisco and Suffolk counties with 10 each. The chart uses the exact net changes shown in the full ranking; these are year-over-year differences, not confirmed closure counts.
FDIC SOD, June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026. Bar lengths are proportional to the net number of branches lost.
How the figures were calculated
Data and coverage
We compared office-level records from the FDIC Summary of Deposits API for June 30, 2025 and June 30, 2026. The records were downloaded October 30, 2026. FDIC released the 2026 results on September 18, 2026. Our analysis covers the 50 states and Washington, DC, excluding territories, credit unions and county areas that cannot be reliably matched across years.
Which branches count?
For the branch count, we included only FDIC service types 11 (full-service brick-and-mortar offices) and 12 (full-service retail offices). Home banking (type 13) and limited-service locations such as drive-through-only offices (type 23) are excluded. Section 7 of the FDIC reporting instructions defines these categories. Our measure is not a count of every location offering banking services.
Which deposits count?
County deposits sum the reported DEPSUMBR field for all SOD office types in each county (STCNTYBR). The original deposits are measured in thousands of U.S. dollars. As a result, deposits per physical branch divides county-wide booked deposits by the number of physical full-service branches. It does not measure deposits held by those physical branches alone, or identify where the depositors live.
County selection and ranking
A county qualifies if it is comparable in both years, has at least one type-11/12 branch in each year, had positive deposits in 2025, lost physical full-service branches on a net basis, and increased its all-type SOD deposits. Ranking order is by branches lost (highest first), then by percentage decline, then by FIPS code. A separate percentage table excludes counties that started with fewer than 10 branches.
County deposit growth (%) = (2026 all-type SOD deposits ÷ 2025 all-type SOD deposits − 1) × 100
County deposits per physical branch = all-type county deposits ÷ type-11/12 branch count
Per-branch change (%) = [(2026 all-type county deposits ÷ 2026 physical branches) ÷ (2025 all-type county deposits ÷ 2025 physical branches) − 1] × 100
Percentages use unrounded figures from the FDIC records; values are rounded only for display. Office-level deposit balances and service types are FDIC observations (official_value). StatRanker aggregates these records into county totals and calculates changes, ratios and rankings (calculated_value). For the pooled deposits-per-branch figure, total deposits are divided by total branches, rather than averaging the county-level ratios.
Connecticut geography adjustment
Three Connecticut office-year records used legacy county codes and were assigned to planning regions for comparability: Ion Bank office 244242 in Naugatuck (both years) and Wilmington Trust office 687104 in Cos Cob (2026). We checked these using the Census Connecticut geography file and a Town of Greenwich address record. The source extracts remain unchanged.
A net decline can reflect closures, openings, reclassifications and other changes. These figures do not show staffing, business hours or walk-in availability. The FDIC also cautions against treating the location where a bank books deposits as a proxy for customer residence; see its September 2026 proposal on deposit geography.

What stands out in the county data
New York County, NY
The net decline in New York County was three branches larger than in either San Francisco or Suffolk County. Its booked deposits rose by $136.57 billion.
Most counties lost just one branch
In 171 of the 245 counties (69.80%), the net decline was exactly one branch. The 20 largest losses account for 116 of the 407 branches lost in the selected counties.
Deposits are concentrated in the selected counties
In 2026, these 245 counties accounted for 44.16% of SOD deposits in the 50 states and DC, but only 26.82% of physical full-service branches. Both shares use the entire 50-state-and-DC dataset as the denominator.
Why Boone County was excluded
The county had 70 SOD offices of all types in 2025 and 59 in 2026, but still had 57 physical full-service branches. Its home-banking records fell from 12 to one, so it does not belong in this ranking.
Largest percentage decline: Boyd County, Kentucky
Among counties with at least 10 physical full-service branches in 2025, Boyd County, Kentucky, had the steepest decline: 17 branches fell to 14 (17.65%), while the county-wide SOD deposit total grew 1.76%. A three-branch loss can matter proportionally more in a smaller network than a larger absolute loss in a major city.
| Rank | County | Branches | Decline | Deposit growth; per-branch growth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Boyd · KY | 17 → 14 | 17.65% | +1.76%; ratio +23.56% |
| 2 | Shelby · IA | 12 → 10 | 16.67% | +1.17%; ratio +21.41% |
| 3 | Ontario · NY | 31 → 27 | 12.90% | +7.86%; ratio +23.84% |
| 4 | Muskogee · OK | 17 → 15 | 11.76% | +5.53%; ratio +19.60% |
| 5 | Wood · WV | 26 → 23 | 11.54% | +2.90%; ratio +16.33% |
Five counties show the opposite trend under a narrower deposit measure
In five qualifying counties, deposits booked across all SOD office types increased even as deposits assigned specifically to physical full-service branches decreased. New Castle County, Delaware, is one: all-type deposits rose from $437.627 billion to $471.579 billion, but type-11/12 deposits fell from $160.065 billion to $154.611 billion. This is why the main ranking uses a consistently labeled all-type deposit total, not a figure limited to physical branches.
Why deposits per branch increased
In Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, deposits booked to the county rose by just $234,000 (approximately 0.035%), while the number of physical full-service branches fell from 13 to 12. That small deposit increase, divided by one fewer branch, produced an 8.37% rise in the deposits-per-branch ratio. The change mainly reflects the smaller denominator.
The figures do not identify which banks closed or opened locations, or whether an office changed service type. They cannot establish the reasons for the changes, or measure travel distance, staffing, profitability or access to credit unions.
For the separate question of where deposits are most concentrated at the state level, see StatRanker's state-level FDIC analysis.
Frequently asked questions
Which county had the largest net decline in full-service branches?
New York County, New York: 502 branches in June 2025 and 489 in June 2026, a net loss of 13. Deposits recorded to the county increased 7.70% in the same period.
Why is Boone County, Missouri, not in the ranking?
Its total count of all FDIC office types fell from 70 to 59, but its physical full-service branch count stayed at 57. The apparent decline came from fewer home-banking records, which are not physical branches.
How many counties had fewer branches but higher deposits?
245 of the 3,102 comparable county areas with physical full-service branches and positive 2025 deposit balances. Together, those counties had 407 fewer physical branches on a net basis and 7.28% more county-wide SOD deposits.
Does a net branch loss mean that many locations closed?
No. These figures compare annual branch counts, not event-level closures. A county may have had openings, closures, reclassifications or other changes between snapshots.
Does deposits per branch measure deposits held at physical branches?
No. This article divides deposits assigned to all FDIC office types in a county by the number of type-11/12 physical full-service branches. It is a comparison ratio, not the average deposits reported at those branches alone.
