Diabetes Prevalence by Country: Top 100 Ranking for 2024
2024 IDF Country Ranking: Where Diabetes Prevalence Is Highest
Pakistan has the highest age-standardised diabetes prevalence in this Top 100 ranking, at 31.4% of adults ages 20–79 in 2024. The Marshall Islands follows at 25.7%, Kuwait at 25.6% and Samoa at 25.4%.
The ranking uses World Bank indicator SH.STA.DIAB.ZS, sourced from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Diabetes Atlas. The estimate year is 2024; the underlying IDF Diabetes Atlas 11th Edition was published in 2025. Prevalence measures the estimated share of adults living with diabetes, not new cases.
Coverage: the 193 UN member states plus the State of Palestine, limited to entries with a published 2024 value. Higher prevalence ranks higher. The fixed Top 100 uses descending prevalence and an alphabetical tie-break only when published values are identical. All 100 prevalence values are directly published IDF/World Bank estimates; StatRanker does not calculate or project country prevalence.
Highest published 2024 prevalence in the defined UN-based country scope.
Position 100 after descending sort and the stated alphabetical tie-break for equal published values.
Fixed Top 100 selected from the defined UN-based country scope; rows without a published 2024 value are not imputed.
Age-standardised prevalence; IDF Diabetes Atlas 11th Edition (2025) via World Bank WDI.
StatRanker counts 77 rows with qualifying in-country data and 23 IDF-extrapolated rows from the Top 100 source notes.
Median calculated directly from the 100 published prevalence values shown in the ranking table.
What the ranking measures
Diabetes prevalence here means the age-standardised percentage of adults ages 20–79 estimated to have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Age standardisation improves comparison between countries with different population age structures.
One numeric series is used throughout: World Bank World Development Indicators indicator SH.STA.DIAB.ZS, sourced from the IDF Diabetes Atlas. IDF country documentation is used separately to classify the evidence basis behind each published estimate.
The ranking compares prevalence rates, not the absolute number of people with diabetes. A small country can rank high by percentage while having far fewer total cases than a much larger country.
Top 10 countries by diabetes prevalence
All ten entries have published 2024 age-standardised prevalence above 21%. Kiribati and Qatar both have 24.6%; their order is only a fixed-position tie-break, not evidence of a prevalence difference.

Methodology
Metric and unit
Age-standardised diabetes prevalence among adults ages 20–79. Unit: percent. The metric covers estimated type 1 and type 2 diabetes prevalence.
Year and source edition
Estimate year: 2024. Primary source chain: IDF Diabetes Atlas 11th Edition, published in 2025, distributed through World Bank WDI indicator SH.STA.DIAB.ZS and rechecked in 2026.
Country scope
Eligible entries are the 193 UN member states plus the State of Palestine. Territories and other non-sovereign economies are excluded before sorting. Only entries with a published 2024 value can enter the Top 100.
Estimate basis
IDF distinguishes estimates supported by qualifying in-country data from extrapolated estimates. When qualifying national evidence is unavailable, IDF selects source countries using similarity factors such as geography, language, ethnicity and income classification; IDF notes that extrapolated estimates are less reliable than estimates based on qualifying in-country sources.
Ranking direction is descending. To keep the dataset at exactly 100 rows, equal one-decimal prevalence values are ordered alphabetically by country name. This tie-break is only a display rule and does not indicate that one tied country has higher prevalence than another.
All 100 percentages are directly published through the World Bank/IDF source chain. An IDF extrapolated estimate is still an IDF-published estimate; StatRanker does not calculate or forecast a country prevalence value.
IDF reports uncertainty around prevalence estimates. This table ranks published point estimates only. A higher point estimate does not necessarily mean prevalence is statistically distinguishable from a nearby country, particularly where uncertainty intervals overlap or the estimate is extrapolated.
Missing values are not imputed and conflicting series are not averaged. NCD-RisC is kept separate because it uses a different adult age scope, estimation framework and endpoint year.
This metric does not measure diabetes incidence, mortality, severity, diagnosed-only prevalence, the absolute number of people with diabetes, or separate type 1 and type 2 prevalence.

Source note: all numeric values are 2024 World Bank WDI / IDF Diabetes Atlas estimates. Row notes identify the 2025 IDF edition and whether the estimate uses qualifying in-country data or an IDF extrapolated basis. Equal values are alphabetically tie-broken only to preserve an exact 100-row ranking.
What stands out in the Top 100
Key Insight
Pakistan's 31.4% estimate is 5.7 percentage points above the Marshall Islands at 25.7%. This is the largest gap between adjacent positions at the very top of the table.
Notable Pattern
Fourteen of the 100 entries are at or above 20%, 31 are at or above 15%, and the median of the Top 100 is 12.0%.
Data Quality
StatRanker counts 77 Top-100 rows supported by qualifying in-country data and 23 IDF-extrapolated rows based on the country source notes.
Interpretation Caution
Several countries share identical one-decimal values, and IDF reports uncertainty around prevalence estimates. Small differences in table position should not be treated as precise statistical gaps.
How to interpret the ranking
A higher position means a higher published age-standardised prevalence point estimate, not a larger total diabetes population. Population size is not part of the ranking.
An extrapolated row is an IDF-published estimate for a country without a qualifying in-country prevalence source. IDF derives it from comparable-country evidence under its methodology; it is not a StatRanker-created value.
The table supports broad international comparison. It should not be used for individual risk assessment, and small differences between neighboring point estimates should not be treated as statistically significant.
For related StatRanker coverage, see the Disease rankings hub and the separate U.S. diabetes statistics overview, which focuses on the United States rather than a global country ranking.
FAQ
Which country has the highest diabetes prevalence?
Pakistan ranks first at 31.4% age-standardised diabetes prevalence among adults ages 20–79 in 2024.
Are these 2026 diabetes prevalence figures?
No. The estimates are for 2024. The page was reviewed in 2026 using the World Bank/IDF source chain; no 2026 prevalence values are projected.
What does age-standardised prevalence mean?
It adjusts country estimates to a common age structure so countries with different population age profiles can be compared more consistently.
Are these official published values?
Yes. The percentages are directly published through World Bank WDI from the IDF Diabetes Atlas. Row notes distinguish estimates supported by qualifying in-country data from IDF extrapolated estimates.
Why are territories such as French Polynesia, Guam and Hong Kong excluded?
The source includes countries, territories and other economies. This page uses a fixed UN-based country scope: 193 UN member states plus the State of Palestine. Non-sovereign territories and other economies are excluded before sorting.
How are equal prevalence values handled?
Equal one-decimal values are ordered alphabetically so the page can contain exactly 100 rows. The alphabetical tie-break is only a display rule and does not imply that one tied country has higher prevalence than another.
What is an extrapolated estimate?
For countries without a qualifying in-country diabetes prevalence source, IDF estimates prevalence from comparable-country evidence using its published methodology.
Is prevalence the same as incidence?
No. Prevalence measures the share of a population living with a condition at a given time; incidence measures new cases arising during a defined period.
Why can another diabetes dataset show different values?
Datasets can differ in age range, diagnostic definition, source studies, standard population, target year and statistical model. NCD-RisC, for example, uses a different adult age scope and estimation framework, so its values are not mixed into this table.
