Richest ZIP Codes in America by Median Household Income
Richest ZIP Codes in America by Median Household Income: 2024 Data
No unique richest ZIP area can be identified using ACS B19013 above $250,000. The current 100-row, specially screened ZCTA sample includes 69 areas in the $250,000+ published interval, tied at rank 1=. The highest precise median among the remaining 31 entries is $249,332 in Bethesda, Maryland (ZCTA 20817, displayed rank 70). This is a filtered comparison, not an independently certified list of every eligible high-income ZCTA in the United States.
The measure is median household income from the 2020–2024 ACS five-year series (B19013), in 2024 inflation-adjusted U.S. dollars per household. Higher values rank first. Coverage: 100 published observations (69 upper-coded; 31 with exact estimates), 0 projected values. Values were accessed October 17, 2026. The Census Bureau produces the underlying estimates; the ranking values were retrieved from a secondary, Census-derived publication.
Independent checks and their limit: separately published ACS-based data support the 79-to-69 upper-tier eligibility reconciliation; 92 ZIP/income pairs were cross-checked with Data Commons and eight others with named ACS publishers. These checks are useful but do not replicate the complete nationwide Census ZCTA candidate universe, including every candidate near the 100th position. The article should not be treated as a certified national Top 100 until that check is complete.
All are published as $250,000+. Exact medians above the ceiling are unavailable.
Bethesda, MD · ZCTA 20817 · ACS 2020–2024; 90% margin of error ±$9,996.
Ashburn, VA · ZCTA 20148 · 90% margin of error ±$12,950.
Selected sample, not a certified national Top 100. The capped group is cross-checked; the full candidate universe and every exact-value margin of error still require independent Census verification.
How rich are America’s highest-income ZIP areas?
The Census Bureau's ACS B19013 estimates the median income of households in a ZIP Code Tabulation Area: half of households are above its median and half below. A ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) is a Census geographic approximation, not every postal ZIP delivery code. ACS 2020–2024 is a five-year statistical estimate presented in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars, not income earned exclusively in calendar year 2024.
The official table reports medians at the upper limit as $250,000+. The numeric 250001 seen in some ACS-derived files denotes an upper, open-ended category: it must not be presented as an exact $250,001 amount or used to rank the 69 capped ZIP areas separately. The median-income difference among those 69 areas is not observable from B19013.
For context, the national ACS 2020–2024 five-year household median is $80,734. The $250,000 lower bound is at least 3.10 times that national estimate (250000 ÷ 80734); even the 100th selected ZCTA's $233,494 is about 2.89 times the same national benchmark. Those ratios compare household-income medians, not real purchasing power or the incomes of residents per person.
79 to 69: rechecked selection
Neilsberg publicly displays 79 areas at the $250,000+ interval in its 2026-labeled ranking based on 2020–2024 ACS. Applying the same three numeric screening conditions to its published population and household counts excludes 7 with fewer than 1,000 residents and 3 more with total population / households over 5. One ratio-outlier also has fewer than 200 households. 69 remain, with 69 distinct population totals matching the 69 upper-coded areas in this table. These are independently checked selection counts, not 79 additional observations in our Top 100.
What the household ratio means
The selection proxy is all ZCTA residents ÷ occupied households, not the ACS estimate of persons living within each household. It can be high when a ZCTA contains college dormitories or military group quarters. For example, 19085 has 11,230 residents and 1,723 households (6.52); 10577 has 5,945 and 794 (7.49). Both exceed the selected ceiling of 5 and are omitted by the stated screen despite their $250,000+ reported income intervals. These are exclusions, not missing income values.
Top 10 displayed ZIP areas from the highest-income bracket
The first ten entries in the full ranking are shown below, but all ten share rank 1= with another 59 areas. The order within the 69-way tie is simply ascending ZIP code; it does not establish which area has the highest median household income. The separate measured tier begins with rank 70.

Why ten identical amounts? The published ACS indicator is censored above $250,000; giving any of these ten a higher numeric income rank would be unsupported. This table is the first ten displayed rows, not ten distinct income ranks.
Chart: first 20 entries of the screened 100-ZCTA ranking
The first twenty displayed rows of the main table are all at the same $250,000+ reporting ceiling. Their bars therefore appear equal: these reflect an identical published category, not evidence that the underlying incomes are equal. Every bar below uses its matching main-table Census code 250001.
Additional comparison: first 20 uncapped estimates, ranks 70–89
Unlike the censored top tier, these areas have published dollar estimates. The following supplementary bars use their actual source values, relative to the same $250,001 display-reference maximum. Even small differences in point estimates may be smaller than the ACS margin of error.
Bar scales: top panel = 250001/250001 for each coded upper interval (not an exact income); lower panel = published dollar estimate / 250001 × 100. Charts repeat existing HTML data and contain no modeled, forecast or interpolated values.
Methodology, independent checks and limitations
Measure, unit and reference period
Median household income in the past 12 months, B19013_001E in the ACS 2020–2024 five-year Detailed Tables; 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars per household. The period pools five survey years. Rank direction is descending. It is neither wages per person nor total household wealth.
Inclusion and selection
The 100-row sample applies a documented residential/estimate-quality screening proxy: ACS total ZCTA population ≥1,000; occupied households ≥200; total resident population / households ≤5; an available row in the secondary extract; and, for an uncapped income median, a published 90% MOE no greater than 25% of the median. ACS upper-coded medians are retained without a numeric MOE threshold because their exact values and usual MOEs are not reported. The total-population/households ratio is not the ACS average household size or a direct group-quarters count. It intentionally excludes places with unusual resident-to-household ratios, and the final ranking must be read as screened rather than exhaustive.
Census source vs publishing route
The Census Bureau is the original official producer of B19013 estimates. PlainZIP provides the numeric_source through a secondary ACS extract; it does not run its own income survey. Data Commons and other named publishers are validation_source presentations of the same Census observations; Census tables are methodology_source. We independently reproduce the capped subset selection using the 79 population and household pairs publicly shown by Neilsberg. The 100-value table itself retains observed secondary-published status rather than claiming an official Census national Top 100. Source-priority rule: use official ACS data where directly checkable; otherwise keep a dated, transparently attributed secondary estimate and disclose unresolved differences.
Important: industry_observed_value is a repository-level provenance flag for a secondary-published ACS observation, not a claim that the income estimate was produced by an industry survey. The underlying Census B19013 estimate is official; official_value should be used for a row only after its exact figure is directly checked against the Census publication. No values in this table are StatRanker forecasts.
Row verification: 92 + 8
Matching geographic code and value: 92/100 rows agree with Data Commons' public national top-100 display (69 capped and 23 uncapped). The 8 entries outside that display were checked against Census Reporter (08558, 94708, 94549, 10069, 20148), Juniper (07417), Neilsberg (02052) or CensusEasy (11030). Notes identify the relevant publisher for every row. Agreement between two publishers is cross-publication corroboration, not a complete independent re-extraction of the official 2024 national file.
Top coding and rank formula
Raw code 250001 denotes the open-ended $250,000+ B19013 upper category. Rank = 1 + count of included rows with a strictly greater coded value. All 69 coded rows tie at rank 1= and the highest uncapped point estimate starts at rank 70. Within ties, numeric ZIP sorting controls only display order. No hidden income amounts above the cap are estimated.
Missing values and source conflicts
The source-publication counts do not use identical scope: Neilsberg displays 79 upper-coded ACS 2020–2024 areas; 69 pass the three published numeric residential screens in our cross-publication reconciliation. Data Commons displays 75 upper-coded entries among its visible national Top 100; that display alone does not certify an identical ACS observation vintage or survey reliability cutoff for every row. Therefore, rows absent from an external top-list are not assumed to have a lower income. Neither apparent conflicts nor missing values are averaged. In the uncapped group, ZCTA 07620 has $246,944 ±$77,017: 77,017 / 246,944 = 31.2%, exceeding the stated 25% uncertainty screen. ZCTA 22211 is also excluded because the 2024 Census Reporter profile has only 27 households and an income MOE of $65,837 on $238,750 (27.6%).
Margins of error (MOE)
Examples from independent ACS displays: 20817 $249,332 ±$9,996 (90% MOE); 20148 $233,494 ±$12,950; 10069 $233,636 ±$52,737. The point-estimate gap between 10069 and 20148 is only $142, far below either MOE, so nearby exact positions should not be interpreted as statistically distinct. Complete MOEs for all 100 rows were not compiled; values alone do not establish significance.
Statistical formulas, scopes and rounding
Uncapped mean = sum of the 31 exact published medians / 31 = 7,468,563 / 31 = $240,921, an unweighted ZCTA mean (not the national median). Range = 249332 − 233494 = $15,838. Four-state share = (16 NY + 12 CA + 8 NJ + 7 CT) / 69 = 62.3% of this selected capped group. National median comparison = 250000 / 80734 = at least 3.10×. Calculations use raw integers and round only when displayed; none are projections or separate ranking values.
Independent 79-to-69 audit trail
Inputs: 79 upper-interval rows, ACS total ZCTA population and occupied-household counts as published by Neilsberg for its ACS 2020–2024 ranking. Apply population ≥1,000 AND households ≥200 AND population / households ≤5 to each row. Output: 69 pass; 10 fail (seven fail the population threshold; the other three exceed the ratio ceiling, including one that also fails the household threshold). Compare the population-count multiset of 69 passers against PlainZIP's 69 upper-interval rows: all 69 distinct population counts match. This reconciles the top-income eligibility group, but is not a direct download of the full official ACS national ZIP file.
Three independently explained exclusions
19085 (Villanova, PA): $250,000+; 11,230 total residents / 1,723 occupied households = 6.52 — excluded by ratio. 10577 (Purchase area, NY): $250,000+; 5,945 / 794 = 7.49 — excluded by ratio. 20129 (Virginia): $250,000+; 538 residents and 162 households — excluded by both minima. These areas retain their observed Census income bracket; exclusion is solely a sample design choice, not an assertion that they have lower median incomes.
Data accessed October 17, 2026. Missing or apparently stale cross-publisher rows are not silently substituted; the directly retrieved official Census B19013 national ZIP API export and all individual MOEs are unavailable for this specific compilation, so completeness under the chosen filters cannot be independently certified. No 2025/2026 values, income forecasts, 1-year ACS estimates, median family income or per-capita figures enter the ranked metric. Source-year matching is shown in row notes. Geographic ZIP labels are approximate locality descriptors.

ACS 2020–2024 five-year, 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars. The 100-row sample contains 69 upper-coded and 31 exact income estimates. Numeric publishing route: one secondary Census-derived extract (PlainZIP), with cross-publisher checks; all values are observed survey estimates, not forecasts. No independently rerun nationwide official eligibility audit is claimed.
Four findings from the 2024 ZIP-income sample
Key Insight
69 of 100 screened ZCTAs (69.0%) are at the official $250,000+ median-income interval and share rank 1=. A second public ACS compilation reports 79 upper-coded places, but applying population ≥1,000, households ≥200 and the total-population/households ≤5 proxy produces the same 69 qualifying population counts. The remaining 10 are sample exclusions, not lower-income ZIP areas.
Notable Pattern
The 31 uncapped medians total $7,468,563 and average $240,921 (sum / 31). Rank 70 is $249,332 and rank 100 is $233,494, a measured span of $15,838. The difference between ranks 70 and 71 is only $132, far below the published ±$9,996 margin for ZCTA 20817.
Regional/Source Concentration
The capped, screened set contains 16 New York, 12 California, 8 New Jersey and 7 Connecticut areas: 43 / 69 = 62.3% across those four states. This is a share of the 69 screened capped ZCTAs, not a national share of households or total income. 92 / 100 ZIP/value pairs also appear in Data Commons' national top-list; eight needed other ACS publications.
Outlier
The exclusion screen changes which expensive areas are shown: 19085 (Villanova, PA, $250,000+) has 11,230 residents / 1,723 households = 6.52, and 10577 (NY, $250,000+) has 5,945 / 794 = 7.49. Both exceed the predeclared ratio ceiling of 5. Separately, 07620 has a 31.2% relative 90% income MOE and fails the 25% reliability screen.
How to use this ZIP ranking responsibly
For upper-tier comparisons: treat the first 69 entries as one reporting category. The Top 10 displayed rows and equal-height Top 20 chart do not identify individual winners. To distinguish an Atherton ZIP from a Potomac or Scarsdale ZIP above the cap, another well-defined metric or richer underlying income distribution would be needed; it would answer a different question.
For exact values below the cap: point estimates define the displayed order, but the ACS is a sample survey. A difference of $132 or $142 is not a reliable basis for claims of meaningful differences when margins of error run into thousands of dollars. Area comparisons should examine 90% MOEs and avoid treating numeric ranking as statistically significant ordering.
For scope: the selection intentionally excludes small-population areas, low-household-count areas and total-population-to-household outliers. Villanova 19085 and New York 10577 remain at $250,000+ in ACS, but fall outside this specific screened residential ranking; they are not mistakenly assigned a lower rank. This is not a list of all postal ZIPs, every high-income ZCTA or all income distributions. A ZCTA median is not average income, IRS income per return, household wealth, real estate value or income adjusted for local living costs.
FAQ: U.S. ZIP Codes by 2024 Median Household Income
Which ZIP code is the richest by median household income in the 2024 ACS?
No unique ZIP can be identified from published ACS B19013 above $250,000. In this filtered 100-area sample, 69 ZCTAs are tied in the top $250,000+ category; no exact within-group income values are disclosed.
Why are the first 69 ZIP areas tied at rank 1?
The Census Bureau's highest reported median category is open-ended, $250,000+. In machine-readable presentations the numeric code 250001 represents that upper interval, not the measured dollar amount $250,001. The next rank after 69 tied firsts is rank 70.
Is this an annual 2024 income measurement?
No. It is the ACS 2020–2024 five-year survey vintage, with incomes presented in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars. It should not be mixed with a 2024 ACS one-year series or with 2025/2026 estimates.
Are all 100 estimates directly retrieved from the Census Bureau?
No. The original observations are Census ACS estimates, but the numeric table uses a PlainZIP secondary extract. For transparency, the existing HTML data-status field records a secondary observed publication, not a new industry survey or direct Census API retrieval. The 69 upper-interval area selection has been independently reconstructed from 79 population/household pairs reported by Neilsberg. Of the 100 income values, 92 are cross-published by Data Commons and eight by other named ACS presenters. A complete official national ZIP export is still not claimed.
Which is the highest-income ZCTA with a precise median below the ceiling?
ZCTA 20817 (Bethesda, Maryland) at $249,332, rank 70 in this list; Census Reporter publishes a 90% margin of error of ±$9,996. It is the highest uncapped estimate, not a unique national median-income leader.
Why do different ZIP rankings report 69, 75 or 79 top-coded ZIP areas?
They are different publication and selection scopes. Neilsberg's ACS 2020–2024 national table shows 79 upper-coded ZCTAs; using its visible population and occupied-household counts, seven fail the 1,000-resident minimum and three more fail the population/households ≤5 screen, leaving 69. Data Commons' displayed Top 100 shows 75 capped entries, but its display is not assumed identical to the ACS 2024 screened eligibility list. These counts must never be presented as competing national estimates of the exact number of millionaires.
Does a $100 difference in median income make one ZIP meaningfully richer?
Not necessarily. ACS estimates have sampling margins of error. Bethesda 20817's $249,332 has a ±$9,996 margin; the difference from rank 71, $249,200, is only $132. This does not establish a statistically significant distinction.
Why are Villanova 19085, New York 10577 and some smaller ZCTAs excluded?
The sampling rules use ACS total population ≥1,000, occupied households ≥200 and a total-population/households proxy ≤5. Villanova 19085 has 11,230 residents / 1,723 households = 6.52; 10577 has 5,945 / 794 = 7.49. Both fail the ratio test even though their reported median interval is $250,000+. ZIP 20129 has 538 people and 162 households, failing both minima. The ratio is a selection proxy, not the average number of people actually living in each household.
Why is Bergen County ZIP 07620 not in the Top 100 even though its median is $246,944?
Census Reporter publishes a 2024 ACS five-year estimate of $246,944 with a 90% margin of error of ±$77,017. Dividing 77,017 by 246,944 gives 31.2%, above this ranking's 25% uncertainty threshold for non-capped medians. It is excluded by the declared reliability filter, not ranked as poorer.
What does median household income not measure?
It does not measure wealth, property prices, average household income, individual earnings, IRS adjusted gross income, taxes, living costs or income per person. ZCTAs also approximate postal ZIP areas rather than matching every delivery boundary.
Sources and reproducibility
U.S. Census Bureau — 2024 ACS five-year Table-Based Summary File
Role: methodology_source and original-data reproduction route, not a fetched numeric source for this table. Publishes all detailed-table estimates and margins of error across geographies. Full replication requires joining 2024 ZCTA rows from B19013, B01003 and B11001, applying the same population, occupied-household and income-MOE rules to the complete eligible universe, then checking the selected Top 100 and its exclusion log.
https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/data/summary-file.2024.html
U.S. Census Bureau — 2024 ACS five-year B19013
Role: methodology_source and original official statistical producer, not the directly retrieved 100-row numeric export. Definition, survey vintage, unit, national $80,734 benchmark, median+ upper interval and guidance on estimates and 90% MOEs. The full national export remains necessary for fully independent post-filter replication.
U.S. Census Bureau — ACS API variable B19013_001E
Role: methodology_source. Machine-readable variable definition; establishes which Census income measure must be queried for original reproduction.
https://api.census.gov/data/2024/acs/acs5/variables/B19013_001E.html
PlainZIP — The Richest ZIP Codes
Role: numeric_source, secondary ACS compilation (not an independent household survey). Provides 100 ZIP/ACS-median/population tuples and the residential/reliability sampling logic. The income values are 2024 five-year ACS observations reproduced by this publisher; StatRanker independently re-screens the capped subset against Neilsberg's displayed population and household counts, then recalculates distribution, gaps and reliability examples.
Data Commons — median household income ZIP ranking
Role: validation_source (cross-publication matching). Corroborates 92 identical ZIP/value pairs, including all 69 upper-coded areas here. Its broader unfiltered national top 100 also includes extra capped / small ZIPs; some entries conflict with other 2024 ACS presentations. The entire list is not silently substituted for the screened extract.

Census Reporter — ACS ZCTA income profiles
Role: validation_source. Provides ZCTA-specific 2024 ACS median estimates and 90% MOEs; verifies sample incomes and the distinct cutoff exclusions: 07620 ($246,944 ±$77,017, 31.2% relative MOE) and 22211 ($238,750 ±$65,837; only 27 households). Also used for 20817, 20148 and other named ZCTAs. Different website snapshots are not taken as proof of a conflict in the same survey release without checking the observation vintage.

Juniper — ZCTA 07417
Role: validation_source. Publishes the 2020–2024 ACS median household income of $236,023 for ZCTA 07417, among the eight ZIP areas outside Data Commons' displayed national top 100.
Neilsberg Research — national rankings and ZCTA 02052
Roles: validation_source for 79-to-69 screening reconstruction, and context_source for conflicting scope. Its September 3, 2026 national page explicitly uses ACS 2020–2024 and publishes population and household counts for all 79 median-$250,000+ entries, including the otherwise excluded 19085, 10577 and 20129. StatRanker re-applies the stated eligibility inequalities to those published inputs; 69 of the 79 satisfy all three, and their 69 distinct population counts match the listed capped sample. Its 02052 page also corroborates that uncapped median. This is one independent publishing organization, not separate household survey data.
