Countries by Access to Safely Managed Drinking Water: 2024 Ranking
Where Safely Managed Drinking Water Coverage Stands in 2024
Within the selected 148 entries, 11 countries and areas share rank 1 at 100.00% for safely managed drinking-water services in 2024 (eight countries and three areas). This is not a claim to list every 100.00% territory in the world. The Central African Republic ranks last at 6.22%. The metric is the estimated share of people using an improved household drinking-water service on premises, available when needed and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination, expressed as a percentage of total population. Higher is better.
Coverage: 148 included entries (134 countries, 14 territories/areas), 2024 reference year. Numeric source: WHO/UNICEF JMP official estimates in the UN-Water SDG 6.1.1 country-and-area source table, at its published two-decimal comparison precision. World Bank WDI indicator SH.H2O.SMDW.ZS is a related distribution channel for the same estimates, not an independent publisher. Row status: 148 official_value; zero forecasts or projections. Primary-source cross-check: October 13, 2026; 148 of 148 entity-year-percentage entries matched the publicly displayed UN-Water 6.1.1 source-data table after applying its published two-decimal comparison precision. Equal published values share one rank.
2024 is the estimate reference year, not necessarily the survey collection year. The latest comparable JMP household series ends in 2024 (published in August 2025); there is no matching 2025 household-country ranking yet.
Eleven joint leaders within the selected 148: eight countries and three territories/areas; other 100% territories are outside this selection.
Central African Republic, last of 148; the top-to-bottom span is 93.78 percentage points.
134 country entries and 14 territories/other areas, all for reference year 2024.
148 official_value entries; 2024 JMP via UN-Water SDG 6.1.1, not the population-weighted global estimate.
What the 2024 Water-Access Ranking Actually Measures
WHO/UNICEF calls drinking water safely managed when an improved source is on premises, available when needed, and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination. Piped systems, protected wells, boreholes, springs, and appropriately treated or protected packaged or delivered water can qualify if all requirements are met. Having a basic drinking-water service alone is not enough.
In its 2025 household report, JMP estimated that 74% of the global population used safely managed drinking-water services in 2024 and about 2.1 billion people did not. The 74% statistic is an official population-weighted global estimate. It is not the 70.83% arithmetic mean of the 148 included places in this table.
This is a fixed 148-entry StatRanker comparison sample based on country/area identifiers used by World Bank WDI, not the full JMP or UN-Water universe. Published 2024 values exist for other territories, including Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba and Saint Barthélemy (both 100.00% in UN-Water), as well as Niue and Martinique. These are outside the selected sample and are not ranked here; their omission does not imply missing water-service access. Missing safely managed total-population values for China and Australia are not zeros. Grenada (2017), North Korea (2023) and the Republic of Congo (2021) have older source endpoints and are excluded from the 2024-only comparison.
The 11 Joint Leaders Within This 148-Entry Ranking
Within the selected sample of 148 countries and areas, these 11 entries all have the published 100.00% SDG 6.1.1 estimate and share rank 1. Alphabetical order does not imply different unrounded values. This is not an exhaustive list of all 100.00% places in UN-Water: for example, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba and Saint Barthélemy also appear at 100% but are outside the sample.

The table uses the same published two-decimal precision for all rows, including San Marino. The full-ranking Top 10 control includes all 11 entries tied at rank 1, rather than splitting an equal-ranked group.
Top 20 Coverage Values: A Narrow Upper Range
All 20 values lie between 99.71% and 100.00%, a span of just 0.29 percentage points. Bars use an honest 0-100% coverage scale, which makes the differences small by design; the numeric labels should be used for close comparisons.
Methodology, Reproducibility and Precision
Metric, unit and ranking direction
SDG indicator 6.1.1: share of total population using safely managed drinking water services, a percent bounded by 0 and 100. JMP requires an improved source on premises, available when needed and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination. Higher coverage ranks higher. This does NOT measure available freshwater, water pollution in rivers, affordability, water stress or water use per capita.
Single original numeric publisher and status
The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) is the only original numeric authority. This page transcribes its 2024 estimates from the publicly readable UN-Water SDG 6.1.1 source-data table at two decimal places. WDI (SH.H2O.SMDW.ZS) redistributes the same series, not a second independent numeric origin. All 148 ranked rows are official_value: officially published JMP statistical estimates, not necessarily direct field measurements taken in 2024.
Fixed sample and transparent limits
The ranking is a fixed editorial comparison of 148 country/area identifiers recognized in WDI: 134 countries and 14 areas/territories. It excludes regional aggregates, missing 2024 safely managed values and older endpoints. It is not an exhaustive census of every country or territory with a UN-Water estimate. Other published records, including 100.00% Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba and Saint Barthélemy and the estimates for Niue and Martinique, remain out of scope. The JMP report count of 160 countries is a different coverage universe, not 160 minus 148 missing countries.
Reproduction of each row
Open the public UN-Water SDG 6.1.1 source-data table linked in Sources; use the Safely managed service column (not At least basic or Basic service). On October 13, 2026, all 148 included 2024 endpoint rows were individually checked by source entity name, year endpoint and published percentage against this primary visible table; 148 matched and zero conflicts were found at two-decimal display precision. The ISO3 codes are a normalized crosswalk for reproducibility rather than fields printed by UN-Water itself. The comparison is limited to the 148 country and area entries specified in the ranking; additional territories reported by UN-Water are outside this sample and are excluded from its rankings and statistics. For each row, the HTML prints its source, endpoint year, status, region, scope and ISO3. This is a manually transcribed cross-check of the primary published table, not a claim to have archived a full-precision machine-readable API extract.
Ties, ranks and precision
All raw data-value fields in this page are uniformly published UN-Water estimates to two decimals, including 100.00 for San Marino. Sort descending by those actual recorded values. Values equal at publication precision share competition rank, with gaps after ties: 11 entries at 100.00% are all rank 1; Netherlands at 99.96% ranks 12. Denmark/Germany share 99.92%; Finland/Luxembourg share 99.65%; Slovakia/Slovenia share 99.57%. Alphabetical row order within ties never implies a hidden-digit difference. The page does not claim the full unrounded WDI ordering.
Reference year and source evidence spans
The 2024 estimate endpoint is not always a 2024 survey collection date. The UN-Water source explicitly labels multi-year reporting spans for Brazil (2016-2024), Colombia (2014-2024), Croatia (2007-2024), Malaysia (2007-2024), Russia (2007-2024) and Seychelles (2018-2024). These rows remain 2024 endpoint estimates; their source-period ranges are shown in their row notes. The household JMP release was published in August 2025; the next 2025 household comparable values are not present in that edition.
Exclusions and conflicting publications
Do not replace a missing 2024 safely managed total-population value with at least basic, a regional aggregate, a rural or urban subset or facility coverage. Grenada (2017), the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (2023) and Republic of Congo (2021) are not ranked as 2024 observations. Separately, some territories with published 2024 numbers were never included in this editorial 148-entry selection. Do not impute, average conflicting reports or re-rank one entity using selective WDI extra decimals against the UN-Water two-decimal standard.
Five editorial geographic groups
Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania are StatRanker editorial region buckets, NOT official UN SDG regional classification. Russia is placed in Europe; Armenia, Cyprus, Georgia and Kazakhstan in Asia; North and South America are both under Americas. These classifications only count included entries and are not statements about sovereign geographic borders.
Descriptive statistics and denominator
All descriptive values are StatRanker-calculated from the 148 published 2024 percentages, not country-level forecasts. Arithmetic mean = sum(percentages)/148, median = average of ascending positions 74 and 75 = (80.64+80.79)/2=80.715%, displayed as 80.72%. Span = 100.00 - 6.22 = 93.78 percentage points. Below-50 share = 43/148; at-least-99 share = 29/148. Regional leader/bottom fractions use 20 as denominator, not world population or all countries.
Quartile / outlier test and limitations
Inclusive linear interpolation on the 148 ascending values gives Q1 about 47.02%, Q3 about 97.90% and IQR about 50.88 percentage points. The lower Tukey fence = Q1 - 1.5 x IQR, approximately -29.30%, so the 6.22% minimum is not formally an outlier under this rule. Two-decimal rounding is used in reported descriptive figures only after the arithmetic; results should not be confused with uncertainty intervals.
Global context versus sample mean
The WHO/UNICEF JMP report estimates around 74% worldwide household coverage for 2024 (the UN-Water world table shows 73.67%). This is a population-weighted/global-estimated measure. It must not be equated with the unweighted average 70.83% across the selected 148 countries and areas. Missing data, samples, weights, and source periods matter.
Precision and coverage policy: every row is expressed at the same two-decimal precision published by UN-Water for SDG 6.1.1, including San Marino at 100.00%. Ties are reported as ties rather than being resolved with hidden digits available for selected countries only. The 148 entries form the stated WDI-based subset, not a claim to cover every UN-Water country or territory. Dates such as 2007–2024 in source notes denote an evidence window ending in 2024.
Full 2024 Ranking: 148 Countries and Areas
Search by country, area or ISO3; filter editorial region, scope and status, then show Top 10, Top 20 or all matching observations. Top 10/20 selects the highest published values among filtered matches and includes every tie at the cutoff; the default Top 10 therefore shows all 11 joint leaders. Sorting changes display order, not which matching observations qualify. Rank always refers to the unfiltered 148-entry sample.

The raw numeric values in this table ARE the uniformly published two-decimal UN-Water SDG 6.1.1 estimates, not truncated copies of a selectively higher-precision dataset. All 148 rows have a 2024 reference endpoint and status official_value. The country-only filter retains overall rank numbers. Additional UN-Water countries or territories outside this fixed WDI-based selection are not ranked here.
Four Data-Specific Findings
Key Insight
Within the selected sample, 11 of 148 entries share rank 1 at 100.00% (eight countries, three areas); other 100% territories outside the sample are not counted. Central African Republic is 148th at 6.22%, a 93.78-percentage-point gap to the sample maximum (100.00 minus 6.22).
Notable Pattern
The median 80.72% exceeds the unweighted mean 70.83% by 9.88 percentage points. Among the 148 entries, 43 (29.1%) fall below 50%, while 29 (19.6%) have values of at least 99%. These are entry counts, not population shares.
Regional Concentration
Europe accounts for 14 of the first 20 entries (70% of that group) and Africa for 14 of the last 20 (70% of that group). The denominator is 20 observations in each segment; regions are editorial groupings, not full world-country totals.
Outlier
The minimum is Central African Republic at 6.22%, only 0.12 percentage points below Chad at 6.34%. A defined Tukey 1.5 x IQR check gives Q1=47.02%, Q3=97.90% and a lower fence about -29.30%, so neither minimum is a formal outlier on this measure. The card reports a tested non-outlier, not a causal explanation.
What a High or Low Drinking-Water Rank Means
A higher score means a greater estimated share of people use a service meeting all three JMP safety-and-availability conditions. It does not measure how much freshwater a country possesses, the amount of rainfall, the affordability of household bills or the percentage of rivers that are clean. Likewise, a low value does not necessarily mean all other households drink untreated surface water: basic, limited and unimproved services are separate categories.
All entries have the same 2024 reference year, but estimation may draw on household surveys and water-quality tests collected at different times. For policy use, compare rural/urban breakdowns, evidence coverage and country-level JMP documentation before inferring local causes. Source status identifies the publisher of the estimate; it does not eliminate model uncertainty.
The global 74% JMP figure uses population weighting and broader geographical estimation. This page's 70.83% unweighted mean is calculated across a selective 148-entity universe; it must not be called the worldwide population share. The same caution applies to region counts and the 134-country-only filter.
Frequently Asked Questions About the 2024 Rankings
What qualifies as safely managed drinking water?
JMP SDG 6.1.1 requires an improved source on the premises, water available when needed and no faecal or priority chemical contamination. A source meeting only basic drinking-water criteria does not automatically qualify.
Which 11 entries lead this selection in 2024?
Gibraltar, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary, Iceland, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Macao SAR, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino and Singapore share the published 100.00% value within the selected 148 entries: eight countries and three areas. Other territories also have 100.00% in the broader UN-Water table, so this is not an exhaustive worldwide leaders list.
Which included country has the lowest coverage?
Central African Republic, 6.22%, ranks 148th; Chad is 6.34% and Tuvalu 8.72%. These are minima within the specified 148 entities, not claims about missing countries or other territories.
What is the source and what does the year mean?
The WHO/UNICEF JMP household dataset is the original numeric source. This table uses its UN-Water SDG 6.1.1 2024 endpoint display values. Some estimates draw on older field evidence; 2024 is the estimate reference year, not necessarily when data collectors visited every location.
Are safely managed drinking-water values available for 2025?
The WHO/UNICEF JMP 2025 household release contains comparable country estimates through 2024. Do not substitute 2025 results for hospitals or schools: those indicators represent different facilities and populations.
Why does San Marino share rank 1?
San Marino is one of 11 entries in this selected 148-entity ranking with a published 2024 estimate of 100.00%. Values tied at the source's two-decimal reporting precision share competition rank 1. A rounded estimate of 100.00% does not establish that every resident has access to safely managed drinking water.
How are identical values such as Finland/Luxembourg ranked?
Finland and Luxembourg both publish 99.65%, and Slovakia and Slovenia both publish 99.57%. Such entries share a competition rank. Alphabetical display position is not an assertion of a difference smaller than 0.01 percentage points.
Why are China, Australia and some territories not included?
China and Australia lack comparable 2024 total-population safely managed drinking-water values in the used source column. Separately, territories such as Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba and Saint Barthélemy have valid UN-Water values but were outside this predetermined 148-entry sample. Neither unavailable nor excluded means 0% coverage.
How is this 148-entry selection related to the JMP report covering 160 countries?
They are different coverage universes: the report states estimates for 160 countries, whereas this table ranks 134 country entities and 14 areas selected using WDI country/area identifiers. Differences between counts cannot be interpreted as precisely twelve missing countries, and the table does not claim to be a census of all JMP reporting entities.
Are the sample mean and median official global estimates?
No. The mean 70.83% and median 80.72% are StatRanker calculations from 148 published country/area percentages. JMP’s approximately 74% global 2024 coverage is population-weighted and calculated over a different universe.
How are descriptive measures calculated, and are any values forecasts?
Mean = sum of the 148 observed percentages divided by 148. Median = (80.64%+80.79%)/2; group shares use explicit counts divided by 148 or 20. All 148 country/area rows are official_value statistical estimates; there are no modeled projections or forecasts in this ranking.
Primary Data, Verification and Method Sources
UN-Water SDG 6 Data — Indicator 6.1.1
Primary numeric evidence for every row: public source-data table, indicator 6.1.1, Safely managed service column and 2024 reference endpoint. The 148 selected entity-year-value triples were checked against the visible table on October 13, 2026 (148 matches, zero two-decimal conflicts); ties reflect its displayed precision.
WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme
WHO/UNICEF JMP produces the household drinking-water estimates displayed by UN-Water. This is the same underlying numeric publisher rather than a separate independent dataset.
