The NAIC source reports premiums in thousands of U.S. dollars; billions and millions below are display conversions only.
This page is a compiled research dataset based on 4 sources, but the Top 100 ranking itself uses one official numeric source: the NAIC 2025 Market Share Report. NAIC consumer and glossary material is used to explain the metric, and AM Best is used only for independently reported 2025 year-over-year context. Those supporting sources do not change any rank, premium value, or NAIC market share.

Overview: What This Homeowners Insurance Market-Share Ranking Measures
NAIC line 04 is the regulatory annual-statement line for Homeowners Multiple Peril. NAIC describes homeowners insurance as a package that protects the home and personal property and typically includes liability protection; common coverages include dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability, and medical payments. This page does not build its own policy-form definition: it ranks the premium volume reported by insurers to NAIC under line 04.
Direct premiums written measure premium written directly by the insurer before adjustments for premium ceded to reinsurers. Earned premium is different: it is the portion of premium associated with coverage already provided during the elapsed part of the policy term. The ranking uses written premium because that is the market-share measure published in the selected NAIC table.
How to read market share
Market share expresses each writer's direct premiums written as a percentage of the NAIC industry total for the same line and geography.
Market share = writer Direct Premiums Written ÷ industry Direct Premiums Written × 100NAIC publishes the market-share percentages directly. StatRanker does not replace those published shares with independently recalculated values.
The geographic basis is States and U.S. Territories. The NAIC report also publishes a broader countrywide aggregation that includes Canada and Aggregate Other Alien business; that broader aggregation is excluded from this U.S.-focused Top 100.
NAIC reports affiliated insurers at group level because the companies are related by ownership. Unaffiliated writers can appear as standalone companies or exchanges. That is why a search for the largest homeowners insurance companies can return a table containing both insurance groups and individual legal insurers.

Chart: Top 20 Homeowners Insurance Writers by Direct Premiums Written
The chart uses exactly the same raw 2025 premium values as the main ranking table. State Farm, Allstate, and USAA form the leading tier, while the official cumulative NAIC market share reaches 73.45% at rank #20.
Methodology
This compiled research dataset uses 4 sources, but the numeric ranking is intentionally single-source. Every rank, entity name, 2025 Direct Premiums Written value, market-share percentage, cumulative share, and the $188.953631 billion industry total comes from the NAIC 2025 Market Share Report. NAIC explanatory material is used only to define homeowners coverage and premium terminology; AM Best is used only for year-over-year context.
Metric
NAIC annual statement line 04, Homeowners Multiple Peril, ranked by Direct Premiums Written.
Unit and direction
Source unit: U.S. dollars in thousands. Direction: descending; a larger raw Direct Premiums Written value ranks higher.
Target year
2025 observed data. The NAIC report is dated August 2026, so this is a 2026 publication snapshot of completed 2025 results, not a 2026 projection.
Geographic coverage
States and U.S. Territories. Canada and Aggregate Other Alien business are excluded by selecting the NAIC's U.S.-territories countrywide aggregation.
Group versus company
Related insurers are reported as NAIC groups; unaffiliated writers can remain standalone companies or exchanges. Group totals are not split into subsidiary insurers.
Inclusion / exclusion
Ranks 1-100 are included exactly. NAIC publishes 125 countrywide writers for this line; ranks 101-125 are excluded only because this article is a Top 100.
Written vs earned premium
Written premium records premium written during the period; earned premium represents the portion associated with coverage already provided. Rank uses written premium only.
Rounding
Ranking uses raw NAIC $000 values. Billion and million labels are rounded only after ranking, so display rounding cannot change rank order.
Missing values: none of the included Top 100 rows is missing Direct Premiums Written or published market share. No row is imputed, estimated by StatRanker, or filled from a secondary source.
Source hierarchy and conflicts: the official NAIC report controls the ranking. AM Best reports approximately $188.87 billion of 2025 U.S. homeowners multiperil Direct Premiums Written, while the selected NAIC States and U.S. Territories table reports $188.953631 billion. The figures are not averaged, and this page does not claim a specific cause for the small difference.
Louisiana qualification: NAIC states that Direct Written Premiums in the Fire, Homeowners, Allied Lines, and Total All Lines sections include estimated 2025 premium data reported directly to NAIC from Louisiana's state-run property insurer of last resort. This is a qualification in the official source, not a StatRanker model or forecast.
What this metric does not measure: number of policies, number of insured homes, average premium, customer satisfaction, complaint rate, claims service, financial strength, solvency, profitability, loss ratio, pricing competitiveness, coverage breadth, or geographic availability.

Insights From the 2025 Homeowners Insurance Ranking
Key Insight
The Top 10 account for 62.39% of official NAIC 2025 market share, while the Top 20 reach 73.45%. Premium volume is therefore concentrated among a relatively small set of large writers.
Notable Pattern
The table drops from Travelers at $8.622 billion in rank #7 to Chubb at $4.707 billion in rank #8. The next positions then compress into a much tighter premium range.
Source Concentration
All 100 ranking rows come from one official NAIC table. Supporting NAIC definitions and AM Best trend data are kept separate so secondary sources cannot alter row values or rank order.
Outlier
State Farm's 18.67% published market share is visibly separated from Allstate at 9.40% and USAA at 7.01%, making the #1 position unusually large within the Top 100 distribution.
What the Ranking Means for Homeowners Insurance Market Share
This page answers the market-size question: which U.S. homeowners insurance groups and companies write the most premium in NAIC line 04. It does not answer which insurer has the most customers, because premium volume reflects both the amount of business written and the price and insured value of that business.
A company's Direct Premiums Written can change because of policy growth or contraction, rate changes, shifts in insured property values, changes in geographic mix, portfolio transfers, acquisitions, or other business changes. A higher premium rank therefore should not be interpreted automatically as equivalent growth in the number of insured homes.
Corporate structure matters too. A group row can combine several affiliated underwriting companies, while a standalone insurer appears as one legal entity. For that reason, the NAIC group/company structure shown here should be preserved when comparing market shares.
Finally, market share is not a quality score. A large premium writer is not necessarily cheaper, more profitable, financially stronger, more widely available, or better at claims handling. Those questions require different datasets and metrics.
FAQ
Which company has the largest U.S. homeowners insurance market share in 2025?
State Farm Group ranks #1 in the selected NAIC table with $35.270 billion in Direct Premiums Written and an 18.67% market share.
What does Direct Premiums Written mean?
NAIC defines direct written premium as premium received or written directly by the insurance company without adjusting for the portion ceded to a reinsurer. On this page, it is the premium-volume metric used for ranking.
What is the difference between written premium and earned premium?
Written premium records premium written during the period. Earned premium is the portion associated with insurance protection already provided during the elapsed part of the policy term. The ranking uses written premium, not earned premium.
How is homeowners insurance market share calculated?
Conceptually, market share equals a writer's Direct Premiums Written divided by the industry Direct Premiums Written total for the same line and geography, multiplied by 100. The percentages displayed here are the market shares published by NAIC.
What does Homeowners Multiple Peril include?
It is NAIC annual statement line 04. NAIC describes homeowners insurance as a package protecting the home and personal property and generally including liability protection, with common coverages such as dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, personal liability, and medical payments. This ranking uses the regulatory line as reported by insurers rather than independently reclassifying policy forms.
Are these 2026 market-share values?
No. These are observed 2025 values in an NAIC report dated August 2026. The page is a 2026 publication snapshot of 2025 results, not a forecast of 2026 premiums.
Why does the table contain groups as well as individual insurance companies?
NAIC groups affiliated insurance companies when they are related by ownership. Unaffiliated writers can remain standalone companies or exchanges. The ranking preserves the reporting structure used in the official source.
Does an 18.67% premium share mean State Farm insures 18.67% of U.S. homes?
No. The share is based on premium dollars, not policy count or number of insured properties. Differences in premium rates, insured values, coverage mix, and geography mean premium share and home-count share are not interchangeable.
Why does AM Best show a slightly different 2025 market total?
AM Best reports about $188.87 billion, while the NAIC States and U.S. Territories table used for this ranking reports $188.953631 billion. The available public sources do not establish a single definitive reason for the small difference, so the figures are not averaged and the NAIC value controls this ranking.
Are loss ratios or customer ratings used to rank the companies?
No. Rank is based only on Direct Premiums Written. Loss ratios, complaints, customer satisfaction, financial strength, pricing, and claims service require separate measures.
