Population density by country (2025): what the metric shows — and what it hides
Population Density by Country (2025): What the Metric Shows — and What It Hides
Monaco ranks first in the UN 2025 population-density projection at 25,732.2 people per square kilometre, followed by China, Macao SAR at 22,562.7 and Singapore at 8,595.5. The ranking uses population density for July 1, 2025 and orders published values from highest to lowest.
The row-level numeric source is the United Nations Statistical Yearbook population, surface area and density table. Its 2025 population figures are medium-fertility projections from the United Nations Population Division's World Population Prospects 2024 Revision. All 50 entries therefore have the status official_forecast; StatRanker does not create a separate 2025 projection.
Coverage: Top 50 confirmed countries and areas. Unit: people per km². Direction: higher density ranks higher. Status mix: 50 official_forecast, 0 official_value, 0 calculated_value and 0 modeled_projection. The UN source covers countries and areas, so special administrative regions and dependent territories can appear alongside sovereign states.

What population density measures
Population density compares population with geographic area. It is useful for showing how much demographic concentration exists relative to territorial size, but it does not show where within that territory people actually live.
This distinction matters at both ends of the ranking. Compact territories can rank very high because their geographic denominator is small. Large countries can have modest national density while still containing extremely dense metropolitan regions.
National density therefore works best as a geographic context indicator. Housing conditions, congestion, infrastructure pressure and urban form require more localized measures such as city density, built-up-area density and urbanization.
Top 10 countries and areas by population density in 2025
The top of the ranking is unusually steep. Monaco and China, Macao SAR both exceed 20,000 people per km², while third-ranked Singapore is below 9,000. Every Top 10 entry exceeds 1,200 people per km².

Chart: Top 20 population-density entries in 2025
The chart uses the same published values as the main table. Monaco and China, Macao SAR are far above the rest of the Top 20, which makes the distribution visually steep even among locations that rank highly worldwide.
Methodology
The ranking uses population density published for 2025 in the United Nations Statistical Yearbook table “Population, surface area and density.” The UN technical notes define population density as the medium-fertility projected population as of July 1, 2025 per square kilometre of surface area, unless otherwise footnoted. The demographic projection source is World Population Prospects 2024.
Metric and unit
Population density, measured as people per square kilometre. Larger published density values rank higher.
Target year and status
Target year: 2025. Every included row is official_forecast because the underlying July 1 population is an official UN medium-fertility projection.
Ranking rule
Entries are sorted by the published one-decimal density value from highest to lowest. Rank 1 is assigned to the largest value.
Coverage
The table contains the 50 highest confirmed country-and-area values. UN source coverage includes territories and special administrative regions as well as sovereign states.
Missing values
No missing density value is estimated, imputed or replaced with a prior-year observation. An entry must have a published 2025 value to be ranked.
Conflict rule
Values from different providers are not averaged. This ranking uses one UN series throughout so that source, target year and methodology remain consistent.
Calculation status
StatRanker does not calculate the ranking values from separate population and area inputs. The population-density indicator is published directly by the UN.
Rounding
The source values used here are published to one decimal place. The same values are stored in data-value, displayed in the table and used for ranking.
The UN technical notes describe the density denominator as surface area and separately define surface area as land area excluding inland water. Other databases may use their own population revisions, geographic metadata or coverage rules, so density figures from different providers should not be mixed row by row. This page uses the UN series consistently for all 50 entries.
Population density does not measure household crowding, built-up-area density, housing affordability, usable land or quality of life. It also cannot show how unevenly people are distributed inside a country or territory.

Insights from the 2025 density ranking
Key Insight
Only Monaco and China, Macao SAR exceed 20,000 people per km². Third-ranked Singapore is substantially lower at 8,595.5.
Notable Pattern
The first 13 entries exceed 1,000 people per km². The threshold is crossed between Guernsey at 1,007.4 and State of Palestine at 928.5.
Regional Concentration
Within the Top 20, the broad regional grouping used on this page contains 8 Asian entries, 6 European entries, 3 entries from the Americas and 3 African entries.
Outlier
The gap between China, Macao SAR and Singapore is 13,967.2 people per km², larger than the total density value of every entry below second place.
What the ranking means — and what it hides
A high rank means that a location has a large projected population relative to its geographic area. It does not by itself establish overcrowding, housing stress or poor infrastructure.
Microstates and compact territories dominate the upper ranks because their geographic denominator is small. Bangladesh and India represent a different pattern: very large populations combined with comparatively limited area.
The strongest interpretation is therefore comparative rather than diagnostic. National or territory-wide density shows broad settlement intensity, while urbanization and total population answer different questions about where people live and how large the population is.

FAQ
Which country or area has the highest population density in 2025?
Monaco ranks first in this UN-based 2025 ranking at 25,732.2 people per km². China, Macao SAR is second at 22,562.7 and Singapore is third at 8,595.5.
Are these observed 2025 population counts?
No. The UN defines the 2025 population used in this density series as a medium-fertility projected population as of July 1, 2025. The ranking therefore uses the status official_forecast.
Are these StatRanker projections?
No. The density values are published by the United Nations. StatRanker only ranks the published 2025 values from highest to lowest.
Why are territories and special administrative regions included?
The UN Statistical Yearbook reports data for countries and areas. Preserving that source universe means territories and special administrative regions can appear alongside sovereign states.
Does high population density mean overcrowding?
No. Population density is a geographic average. Household crowding, city congestion and housing conditions require different indicators.
Can a low-density country still have very dense cities?
Yes. Population can be concentrated in a few metropolitan areas while much of the national territory remains sparsely inhabited.
Is the denominator land area or surface area?
The UN technical note describes population density as projected population per square kilometre of surface area and defines surface area for this publication as land area excluding inland water. Different databases can still produce different density values because their population revisions, geographic metadata or coverage rules may differ.
What should population density be compared with?
Total population, urbanization and city-level density are useful companion measures because they distinguish national scale from the spatial concentration of residents.
