Most Educated U.S. Counties 2026: Top 100 by Bachelor’s Degree or Higher
Which U.S. counties have the highest bachelor’s degree attainment?

Overview: what “most educated” means here
“Most educated” refers to one specific Census educational-attainment measure: the share of residents age 25 and older who have completed a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, professional degree or doctorate.
The ranking does not measure school quality, current college enrollment or the total number of degree holders. A small county can rank above a large county because the metric is a percentage rather than an absolute count.
For national context only, U.S. Census QuickFacts reports 35.7% of U.S. residents age 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree or higher for 2020–2024. The 100th entry in this ranking is 49.8%, well above that national comparison benchmark.
Census county-level geography includes conventional counties and county equivalents. That is why Virginia independent cities, the District of Columbia and Connecticut planning regions can appear in the same national county ranking.
Top 10 most educated U.S. counties and county equivalents
Virginia places five entries in the Top 10, including the first two positions. Colorado places three, while New Mexico and Maryland each contribute one.

Methodology
Metric
Percentage of the population age 25 years and over with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Census ACS Subject Table S1501 variable: S1501_C02_015E.
Source and period
U.S. Census Bureau 2024 ACS 5-Year Subject Table S1501. The estimate describes the 2020–2024 ACS period and is used here as the latest county-complete snapshot for this ranking.
Unit and direction
Unit: percent of residents age 25+. Direction: descending; the higher published percentage receives the higher rank.
Geographic scope
Counties and Census county equivalents in the 50 states and District of Columbia. Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories are excluded.
Every ranking row is an official_value published by the Census Bureau. The page does not calculate county attainment percentages from component counts and does not estimate or project values for 2026.
County equivalents are retained where the Census uses them at county geography level, including Virginia independent cities, the District of Columbia and Connecticut planning regions.
Values are sorted descending. When multiple entities have the same published one-decimal estimate, alphabetical order is used only as a deterministic display tie-break. No conflicting values are averaged.
ACS estimates are survey estimates and include margins of error. The ranking uses the published point estimate as its sorting field, so small gaps between nearby entries should not automatically be interpreted as statistically significant differences.
The metric measures completed educational attainment among adults. It does not directly measure K–12 school quality, current college enrollment, workforce productivity, income, skills or the absolute number of degree holders.

Insights from the Top 100
Key Insight
The Top 100 cutoff is 49.8%, compared with the 35.7% U.S. QuickFacts benchmark for bachelor’s degree or higher among residents age 25+ in 2020–2024.
Notable Pattern
Twenty entries reach at least 61.1%. Falls Church city at 80.5% is 10.8 percentage points above third-ranked Los Alamos County.
State Concentration
Colorado contributes 16 entries to the Top 100 and Virginia contributes 11, the two largest state-level concentrations in this table.
Outlier
Falls Church city is the high-end outlier at 80.5%, standing 3.4 percentage points above second-ranked Arlington County.
What the ranking means
The ranking shows where adults with at least a four-year degree make up the largest share of the age-25-and-older population. It is a measure of resident educational attainment, not a ranking of local schools or universities.
Because the measure is percentage-based, population size does not determine rank. Small counties can appear alongside major metropolitan counties even though the absolute number of degree holders is very different.
Close ranks should be interpreted cautiously because ACS estimates have margins of error. A difference of a few tenths of a percentage point does not necessarily indicate a statistically meaningful difference between two counties.

What is the most educated U.S. county in this ranking?
Falls Church city, Virginia ranks first at 80.5% of residents age 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree or higher. Falls Church is an independent city treated by the Census as a county equivalent.
Are these 2026 education estimates?
No. “2026” refers to the publication snapshot. The ranking uses the Census Bureau’s 2024 ACS 5-year estimates covering the 2020–2024 period.
Are these official published values?
Yes. All 100 rows use the published Census ACS S1501 percentage for bachelor’s degree or higher among residents age 25+. No county value is a projection or a calculated forecast.
Why are Virginia independent cities included?
The Census treats Virginia independent cities as county-equivalent geographies in county-level datasets, so they are included under the same geographic rule as counties.
Is Puerto Rico included?
No. This ranking is limited to counties and county equivalents in the 50 states and District of Columbia. Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories are outside the ranking scope.
How are equal percentages ranked?
Values are sorted from highest to lowest. When published one-decimal percentages are equal, alphabetical entity name is used only as a stable display tie-break. The equal values remain tied at the published precision.
Does a higher rank mean better local schools?
No. The metric describes completed educational attainment among adult residents. It does not directly measure K–12 school quality, test scores, university quality or current student outcomes.
Why do ACS margins of error matter?
ACS figures are survey estimates. Especially for smaller counties, uncertainty can be meaningful, so small differences between nearby ranks should not automatically be treated as statistically significant.
