Top 100 Countries by UNESCO World Heritage Sites (2026)
Where UNESCO's World Heritage properties are concentrated
Italy leads with 62 UNESCO World Heritage properties, followed by China (61), France (56), Germany (55) and Spain (50). The ranking covers World Heritage properties officially inscribed for each country, including the additions approved at UNESCO's July 2026 World Heritage Committee meeting.
Measure: number of inscribed World Heritage properties per country. Unit: properties. Order: highest first. Coverage: 100 of the 173 countries with listed properties. Source: UNESCO World Heritage Centre country profiles. Status: all 100 country totals are official_value records, with no estimates or forecasts. Retrieved: 10 October 2026.
The totals include all properties inscribed through October 2026, not just additions from that year. UNESCO lists 1,273 World Heritage properties worldwide. When a property belongs to more than one country, UNESCO includes it in each national total but counts it only once worldwide.
56 cultural and 6 natural, one property ahead of China (61).
57.8% of UNESCO States Parties that have at least one inscribed property.
The two countries in the middle of the list, Sri Lanka and Ukraine, each have eight properties.
Seven countries in the Top 100 have three properties. Countries with equal totals are ordered alphabetically.
What counts as a UNESCO World Heritage property?
UNESCO lists cultural properties for their cultural significance, natural properties for their natural significance and mixed properties for both. The three categories add up to each country's total: a mixed property is not counted again as cultural or natural.
The country total is a count of properties, not the number of monuments, buildings, archaeological components or square kilometres. Serial properties can consist of multiple component parts yet still contribute only one property to a country's count.
UNESCO's five World Heritage regions are used for filtering: Europe and North America, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Arab States, and Africa. These are UNESCO classifications, not standard continental boundaries.
Top 10 countries with the most UNESCO World Heritage properties
Italy's one-property lead over China is narrow. France, Germany and Spain complete the first five; among the next five countries, the totals run from India's 45 to Iran's 30. The table also shows how each country's properties are divided into cultural, natural and mixed categories.

Countries are ranked by their total number of properties. When totals are equal, countries appear in alphabetical order. All three category counts come directly from UNESCO.
Chart: World Heritage properties in the Top 20 countries
China's 61 properties amount to 98.4% of Italy's 62, while France's 56 amount to 90.3%. The bars use the same totals as the tables, with Italy setting the scale.
Methodology and source verification
The ranking uses the inscribed World Heritage properties recorded in UNESCO's country profiles on 10 October 2026, following its July committee meeting. We use UNESCO's published totals and category counts, rather than estimating how many properties a country might have. Every country entry is marked official_value.
Metric and calculation
For each country, Total = C + N + M, where C means cultural, N natural and M mixed properties. We add the three published counts and check the result against UNESCO's reported total. Countries with more properties rank higher; ties are listed alphabetically. All totals are whole numbers, so no rounding is needed.
Scope and time
The figures include additions from UNESCO's July 2026 meeting: 25 properties worldwide, consisting of 19 cultural, five natural and one mixed. UNESCO lists 173 countries with at least one inscribed property; the 100 highest totals appear here.
Country attribution and exclusions
A World Heritage property shared by several countries appears once in each participating country's total. The ranking excludes sites proposed for inscription, intangible heritage, UNESCO Global Geoparks, biosphere reserves and properties removed from the World Heritage List. A property made up of several locations still counts as just one.
Sources, status and conflicts
All country totals come from UNESCO's own profiles. We also checked its World Heritage List and the July 2026 inscriptions. One independent compilation reports 54 for Germany and 9 for Jordan, and omits Norway; UNESCO's figures are 55, 8 and 8 respectively. Where sources disagree, this ranking follows UNESCO.
Top 100 cutoff and ties
Several countries have exactly three World Heritage properties. Alphabetical order places Iceland at rank 100; other countries with three properties fall outside this 100-country list because of the cutoff, not because they have fewer properties.
Derived indicators and limitations
The median of the 100 ranked countries is (8 + 8) / 2 = 8, using positions 50 and 51. Regional figures count countries within this Top 100, not properties worldwide. For Australia, the natural-or-mixed proportion is (12 + 4) / 21 × 100 = 76.2%, calculated from its own total of 21. A country's number of listings cannot tell us how many people visit them or how well they are preserved.
Countries without a listed property are not ranked. We do not replace UNESCO figures with older or missing values from other websites. Some of the 1,273 properties worldwide are shared across borders, so adding countries' totals together would count those properties more than once.

Four findings from the 2026 UNESCO country ranking
Key Insight
Italy leads China by just one property: 62 versus 61. France is third with 56, five behind China. Iceland, at rank 100, has three — 59 fewer than Italy.
Notable Pattern
The Top 100 median is 8 properties. Rank 50 (Sri Lanka) and rank 51 (Ukraine) both have 8, so the median is (8 + 8) / 2 = 8. Italy's 62 is 7.75 times that Top 100 median.
Regional Concentration
40 of the 100 countries (40%) fall within UNESCO's Europe and North America region, compared with 22 in Asia and the Pacific, 14 in Arab States, 12 in Africa and 12 in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Outlier
Australia's natural and mixed properties dominate its total: 12 natural + 4 mixed = 16 out of 21, or 76.2%. Italy has 6 natural + 0 mixed out of 62 (9.7%).
What the country ranking means—and what it does not
The ranking shows the number of properties UNESCO has inscribed for each country. It is not a score of how impressive a country's history, landscapes or cultural traditions are. A single entry may cover a large natural area or several historic locations.
If you're interested in visiting these places, the cultural, natural and mixed counts offer a useful starting point. The country total won't tell you which sites are open to visitors, how far apart they are or whether access is restricted. For that, consult the individual UNESCO property records.
UNESCO's global figure of 1,273 counts each property once. Country totals count shared properties in each participating country, so national percentages cannot simply be added together to produce a worldwide share.
UNESCO World Heritage ranking: FAQ
Which country has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2026?
Italy is first with 62 inscribed properties: 56 cultural, 6 natural and no mixed properties. China ranks second with 61: 42 cultural, 15 natural and 4 mixed.
Are these all sites inscribed during 2026?
No. The country totals are cumulative as of October 2026, including inscriptions from earlier decades. At the 48th session in July 2026, UNESCO inscribed 25 new properties worldwide: 19 cultural, 5 natural and 1 mixed.
How do cultural, natural and mixed categories affect each total?
Each UNESCO property belongs to exactly one of the three categories. A country's total equals its cultural count plus its natural count plus its mixed count. For example, Australia has 5 + 12 + 4 = 21.
Why does Germany have 55 instead of 54 properties in this ranking?
UNESCO's official Germany State Party profile lists 55 properties: 52 cultural and 3 natural. A third-party table reports 54 despite showing a category sum of 55. This ranking follows the official UNESCO figure, not the conflicting summary.
Why are Norway and Jordan listed with eight properties?
UNESCO currently lists Norway with 8 properties (7 cultural, 1 natural) and Jordan with 8 (6 cultural, 1 natural, 1 mixed). Some independent country rankings omit Norway or show Jordan as 9; the UNESCO State Party records take precedence.
Can one World Heritage property be counted for more than one country?
Yes. UNESCO lists 51 transboundary or transnational World Heritage properties. A shared property is attributed to every participating State Party's national list, but counted once in the global 1,273-property total.
Why are some countries with three UNESCO sites missing from the Top 100?
Several countries have three properties. We list countries with the same total alphabetically, which places Iceland 100th. Others with three are outside the Top 100 only because the table stops there.
Does a higher UNESCO rank mean a better travel destination?
No. The ranking counts listed properties, not visitor numbers, tourist income, conservation condition or how much there is to see at each location.
Where do the 2026 country figures come from?
They come from UNESCO's country profiles, checked on 10 October 2026 after the July inscriptions. Every country total is an official_value, not a prediction. The median, gaps and regional counts are calculated separately from those published totals.
Sources and reproducibility
UNESCO publishes both the country profiles used for the national totals and the World Heritage List used to check the worldwide figures. These are two resources from the same organization. World Population Review is included only to show where a separate published ranking disagrees; its numbers do not determine positions here.
UNESCO World Heritage Centre: States Parties
Provides the official total for each country, along with the cultural, natural and mixed counts displayed in both tables.
World Heritage List
Lists 1,273 distinct World Heritage properties worldwide, including 51 transboundary or transnational properties, and shows the countries and categories UNESCO recognises.

World Population Review: UNESCO Sites by Country
This comparison lists Germany with 54 properties and Jordan with 9, while Norway is missing. UNESCO's country records show 55, 8 and 8 respectively, and those are the values used in the ranking.
