How to Read U.S. Auto Insurance Market Share
Quick answer
This is a premium-volume ranking. A group or standalone company with a larger dollar amount of 2025 direct premiums written ranks higher. It does not rank insurers by assets, corporate revenue, customer count, policy count, claims service, profitability or price.
The percentages shown in the tables are the official NAIC market-share values published with the source data.
Why some percentages do not add perfectly: individual market-share figures are displayed to two decimal places, while NAIC cumulative share is based on underlying unrounded values. Adding the displayed percentages can therefore differ from the official cumulative percentage by 0.01 percentage point.
What are direct premiums written?
Direct premiums written are premiums received directly by an insurer without adjustment for amounts ceded to a reinsurer. In this ranking, DPW is the premium-volume measure used to compare NAIC groups and standalone companies.
Written vs. earned premiums
Written premium reflects premium generated from policies written during a period. Earned premium reflects the portion associated with coverage already provided. This ranking uses direct premiums written, not direct premiums earned.
Why can DPW differ between insurers?
Premium volume can differ because insurers have different policy volumes, geographic footprints, coverage mixes, books of business and average premiums. The ranking does not assign any one factor as the cause of a specific company's position.
Why market share is not customer share
The numerator and denominator are measured in premium dollars, not policies, drivers or insured vehicles. Two insurers can therefore have different premium shares even if customer counts are similar.
Why GEICO appears under Berkshire Hathaway Group
The NAIC consolidates affiliated insurance companies into ownership groups. Its group index lists GEICO Advantage Insurance Co, GEICO Casualty Co, GEICO General Insurance Co, Government Employees Insurance Co and other GEICO affiliates under Berkshire Hathaway. That is why the group-level market-share table shows Berkshire Hathaway Group rather than a separate GEICO row.
The ranking uses the NAIC countrywide aggregation for States and U.S. Territories. It does not use the separate aggregation that also includes Canada and Aggregate Other Alien business.
The source line is Total Private Passenger Auto. Commercial Auto is reported separately and is not mixed into this ranking.

Methodology and Data Definitions
Metric
Total Private Passenger Auto direct premiums written.
Unit
U.S. dollars. NAIC ranking-source values are reported in $000 and displayed here as billions or millions.
Direction
Descending. Higher raw 2025 DPW ranks higher. Display rounding never determines rank.
Target year
2025 observed annual-statement data. Final report publication: August 2026.
Geographic coverage
States and U.S. Territories. Canada and Aggregate Other Alien business are excluded.
Entity basis
NAIC Group/Company. Affiliated legal insurers can be consolidated under an ownership group.
Data status
100 official published values. No calculated values, forecasts, projections or imputed ranking values.
Missing values
No missing DPW values occur among the included Top 100. Any row lacking a usable source value, year or method basis would be excluded rather than estimated.
The NAIC states that direct written premiums in the market-share report come from the Exhibit of Premiums and Losses in the Property/Casualty annual statement. Insurance groups consist of companies related by ownership, so a group-level entry can include several affiliated legal insurers.
The countrywide table publishes 125 groups and companies for Total Private Passenger Auto. This page deliberately uses exactly the first 100 confirmed entries, which account for an official cumulative 98.70% of the 2025 market.
The final NAIC market-share report is the sole numeric authority for rank, DPW and published market share on this page. Supporting NAIC references are used only to clarify terminology and publication context. No conflicting third-party value is averaged into the ranking dataset.
Display conversion only: source DPW in $000 ÷ 1,000,000 = billions of U.S. dollars. Values below $1 billion are displayed in millions. The raw ranking values remain the official source numbers.
Market share is conceptually DPW divided by total industry DPW. The page uses the official NAIC market-share percentage accompanying each row rather than substituting an independently estimated percentage.
Individual market-share values are displayed to two decimal places. Official cumulative percentages use underlying unrounded figures, so adding displayed shares can produce a 0.01 percentage-point difference from the published cumulative total.
The NAIC source also reports loss-ratio information, but loss ratio does not affect this ranking. This page ranks only by direct premiums written and should not be interpreted as a ranking of underwriting profitability, claims quality or insurer performance.
“Largest” on this page means largest by private-passenger auto direct premiums written. It does not mean largest by total corporate revenue, assets, market capitalization, total policyholders or number of insured vehicles.
The ranking does not measure policy count, customer count, insured vehicles, average price, claims satisfaction, complaint ratios, financial strength, direct premiums earned or commercial auto business.

What the 2025 Ranking Shows
Key Insight
State Farm and Progressive are separated by only $158.169 million in direct premiums written. Their official market shares are 18.62% and 18.58%, respectively.
Notable Pattern
Premium volume is concentrated near the top. Official cumulative share reaches 58.87% after four entries, 65.05% after five, 76.77% after ten and 86.44% after twenty.
Regional/Source Concentration
Every ranked row uses the same national NAIC market-share report and the same geography: States and U.S. Territories. No state-level, Canadian, foreign or third-party ranking values are mixed into the Top 100.
Outlier
The first two entries each exceed $69 billion in DPW. Progressive at rank 2 is $26.149 billion above Berkshire Hathaway at rank 3, creating a large break between the top two and the rest of the ranking.
What Market Share Does — and Does Not — Tell You
This ranking answers a specific question: which U.S. private-passenger auto insurance groups and standalone companies write the largest dollar volume of premium?
It does not identify the cheapest insurer, the company with the most policyholders, the insurer with the best claims service or the most profitable carrier. A larger DPW figure can reflect a larger book of business, different average premiums, a different coverage mix, a broader geographic footprint or a combination of factors.
Group reporting is important when interpreting familiar consumer brands. GEICO is represented through Berkshire Hathaway Group because affiliated GEICO insurance companies are consolidated under that ownership group in the NAIC structure.
Loss ratio is separate from this ranking. Although the NAIC report includes loss-ratio information, ordering here is determined only by direct premiums written. A high market-share position should therefore not be read as a profitability or insurer-quality score.
The figures are a one-year 2025 snapshot. They are not growth rates, CAGR estimates or forecasts. Measuring year-over-year growth would require a separate historical comparison using consistent group structures and comparable prior-year data.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “largest auto insurer” mean in this ranking?
“Largest” means largest by 2025 Total Private Passenger Auto direct premiums written. It does not mean largest by assets, total corporate revenue, customer count, policy count or market capitalization.
What is the size of the U.S. private passenger auto insurance market in 2025?
The NAIC reports $371.484656 billion in direct premiums written for Total Private Passenger Auto in States and U.S. Territories for 2025.
Which auto insurance company or group has the largest market share in 2025?
State Farm Group ranks first with $69.164 billion in direct premiums written and an official 18.62% market share.
Who are the five largest U.S. auto insurers by premium volume?
The top five NAIC Group/Company entries are State Farm Group, Progressive Group, Berkshire Hathaway Group, Allstate Insurance Group and United Services Automobile Association Group.
How large is Progressive's auto insurance market share?
Progressive Group ranks second with $69.006 billion in 2025 direct premiums written and an official market share of 18.58%.
Why is GEICO not listed separately?
The NAIC publishes this table on a Group/Company basis. GEICO insurance companies appear in the NAIC group index under Berkshire Hathaway, so their business is represented within Berkshire Hathaway Group rather than as a separate GEICO row.
What percentage of the market do the Top 10 insurers account for?
The official cumulative market share after rank 10 is 76.77%. Because individual percentages are displayed to two decimal places, adding the rounded percentages can differ slightly from the official cumulative figure calculated from unrounded values.
How is auto insurance market share calculated?
Conceptually, market share equals an insurer's or group's direct premiums written divided by total industry direct premiums written, multiplied by 100. This page displays the official NAIC percentage published with each row.
What is the difference between direct premiums written and earned?
Written premium reflects premium generated from policies written during a reporting period. Earned premium reflects the portion associated with coverage already provided. This ranking uses direct premiums written.
Does market share equal the number of customers?
No. Market share here is based on premium dollars, not policies, customers, drivers or insured vehicles.
Does loss ratio affect the ranking?
No. The NAIC report contains loss-ratio information, but this ranking sorts only by direct premiums written. Loss ratio is not used to determine rank.
Does this ranking include commercial auto insurance?
No. It uses the NAIC Total Private Passenger Auto line. Commercial Auto is reported separately.
Are these forecasts for 2026?
No. This is a 2026 publication snapshot of observed 2025 annual-statement data. Every ranking row is an official published value, not a forecast or modeled projection.
How much of the market is covered by the Top 100?
The official cumulative market share at rank 100 is 98.70%. The NAIC countrywide table continues through rank 125.
