Overview: where registered nurses earn the highest median pay
This ranking compares metro-area pay for Registered Nurses under SOC 29-1141 using one consistent BLS measure: annual median wage. The median is the wage at which half of workers in the occupation earn more and half earn less. Using the median keeps the ranking focused on the middle of each local RN wage distribution rather than on a small number of unusually high earners.
The geographic pattern is striking. California occupies 23 of the first 30 positions, while Oregon, Washington and Hawaii also appear repeatedly near the top. The first non-Western metro is New York-Newark-Jersey City at rank 32 with a median of $119,720.
These are nominal wages, not cost-of-living-adjusted salaries. A higher rank does not necessarily mean greater purchasing power, better working conditions, more RN jobs, faster hiring, lower taxes or a higher quality of life.
National benchmark: BLS reports a U.S. median annual wage of $97,550 for registered nurses in May 2025. Every metro in this Top 100 ranks at or above $97,780.
Top 10 highest-paying metro areas for registered nurses
The top of the ranking is dominated by California. Eight of the first ten metros are in California, while Hawaii holds two positions. The wage gap remains large even within the Top 10: the leader is $77,480 above the tenth-ranked metro.

Chart: Top 20 metro areas by RN median annual wage
The Top 20 chart uses the same raw median wage values as the ranking table. The bars are scaled to San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, the $216,740 leader.
Methodology
The ranking uses the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics dataset for Registered Nurses, SOC 29-1141. The reference period is May 2025. The ranking metric is the BLS-published annual median wage. Higher raw wage values rank higher. The page is a 2026 publication snapshot of May 2025 official estimates, not a 2026 wage forecast.
Metric, unit and direction
Metric: annual median wage for Registered Nurses. Unit: nominal U.S. dollars per year. Direction: descending, so a higher published median annual wage receives a higher rank.
Data status
All 100 rows are official_value. Each ranked wage is directly published by BLS OEWS. There are 0 calculated_value rows, 0 official_forecast rows and 0 modeled_projection rows.
Coverage and exclusions
The table contains exactly the 100 highest confirmed metropolitan-area annual median wages in the ranked dataset. State, national and nonmetropolitan estimates are excluded. Missing, suppressed or unpublished metro medians are not imputed and are not assigned synthetic values.
Rank and tie handling
Ranks are assigned from the raw published annual median wage, not from a rounded or reformatted value. Where two metros have the same published median, alphabetical metro name is used only as a deterministic display tie-break.
Source hierarchy and conflicts
This is a single-source official dataset. BLS OEWS is the authoritative source for ranked values, occupation code and reference period. Secondary sources are not used to fill, average, revise or override BLS values. If a secondary source conflicts with BLS, the BLS value controls.
Calculated and projected values
No calculated values or projections are used. Calculation inputs, calculation formulas, base-year projection formulas, growth assumptions and modeled projection methods are therefore not applicable to this ranking.
Rounding and display
Annual median wages are displayed to the nearest dollar as published by BLS. No additional rounding is applied before ranking. Chart bar widths are presentation-only ratios derived from the same raw table values and do not create new wage estimates.
Region filter
The West, Northeast, Midwest and South labels are display filters, not BLS wage fields. Multi-state metros are assigned to the broad region of the first state or district shown in the BLS metro name. Region labels do not affect rank.
What BLS wages include
OEWS wages are straight-time gross pay. BLS includes items such as base pay, cost-of-living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazard pay, incentive pay and tips, while excluding overtime, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses and employer supplementary benefits.
Survey and area definitions
The May 2025 OEWS estimates combine six semiannual survey panels over a three-year period and use BLS model-based estimation. They are survey estimates rather than payroll records for every nurse. May 2025 area estimates use OMB Bulletin 23-01 metropolitan definitions.
What this metric does not measure: cost of living, purchasing power, after-tax income, overtime earnings, shift premiums, total compensation, benefits, RN specialty, experience, education, employer type, union status, staffing ratios, vacancies, employment growth or job quality. A higher nominal wage rank should not be interpreted as a complete measure of financial well-being or employment conditions.

What this ranking means
Use the ranking as a location-level benchmark for the middle of the RN wage distribution. It can show where nominal registered-nurse pay is highest, but it cannot tell an individual nurse exactly what an offer should be. Specialty, experience, employer, shift, credentials and local labor conditions can move actual pay substantially.
The most important interpretation risk is treating nominal wage as purchasing power. Several of the highest-paying metros are also expensive housing and consumer markets. A lower-ranked metro can therefore leave a nurse with similar or greater disposable income after housing, taxes and other local costs.
Status also matters: every ranked wage is an official BLS OEWS estimate for May 2025. The 2026 label describes the publication snapshot, not a projected 2026 salary.
