Most Visited U.S. National Parks in 2025: Rankings and Visitor Trends
National Park Visitation in 2025: All 63 Parks Ranked
Great Smoky Mountains National Park led U.S. national parks with 11,527,939 recreation visits in calendar year 2025. This ranking covers the 63 park units designated national parks during 2025 and ranks them from most to fewest recreation visits, using National Park Service (NPS) Visitor Use Statistics. The annual values are 63 official_value records, reported in visits rather than unique people. Official 2024 NPS values support year-over-year calculations and rank movement; the separate monthly analysis uses a credited NPS-derived published compilation.
Data year: 2025 (with 2024 comparisons). Annual-ranking numeric source: National Park Service (one official publishing organization); monthly all-park chart: separately credited Chartly NPS-derived aggregation. Unit: recreation visits. Rank direction: highest first. Annual-ranking status: 63 official_value; 0 modeled_projection; 0 official_forecast. NPS results released March 13, 2026; sources reviewed October 29, 2026. Percentages and concentration measures are StatRanker calculated_value statistics from reported observations, not forecasts.

Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska; same 2025 official recreation-visit measure.
Recreation visits across exactly 63 national parks during 2025.
38,801,003 summer visits divided by all 93,892,121 park visits; calculated_value.
Overview: Park visits, not all NPS sites
The 63 designated national parks recorded 93,892,121 recreation visits in 2025, compared with 94,287,567 in 2024, a decrease of 395,446 visits (-0.42%). That is different from the 323,014,305 visits reported across all National Park System sites in 2025. The system-wide count also includes national recreation areas, parkways, memorials, and other designations.
Scope of the 2025 ranking: The list is fixed to the 63 units holding national park designation in 2025. Chiricahua was a national monument during 2025 and became the 64th national park on October 20, 2026. It is therefore not a 2025 national-park row. This prevents a change in designations after the data year from altering the historical ranking.
Great Smoky Mountains had 6,543,414 more visits than Zion. The ten most visited parks accounted for 48,756,659 visits (51.93% of the 63-park total). July was the busiest calendar month across the 63 national parks, but the peak month at an individual park may differ: Great Smoky Mountains recorded more visits in October than in July.
Recreation visits count visits, not distinct people. Multiple visits by the same person may appear more than once. NPS values are official published estimates based on each park's counting methods.

Charts: Visitor concentration and 2025 monthly seasonality
20 most visited parks: full-year recreation visits
Great Smoky Mountains is the clear outlier by volume; its bar is more than twice Zion's. All 20 values match the full ranking below.
Top 20 parks: 71,168,919 visits, or 75.80% of all 63-park visits. Concentration = sum of top-20 2025 visits / 93,892,121.
All 63 national parks: visits by month, 2025
This chart reproduces the 12 monthly totals published by Chartly in its NPS-derived 2025 compilation for the same 63-park group; the monthly aggregates were not independently rebuilt from 63 NPS park-level files for this page. StatRanker recalculated the peak-to-low ratio and summer share from those 12 published totals and verified that their sum equals the official 2025 63-park annual total of 93,892,121. Green bars mark June, July, and August. The original NPS data package and reproduction steps are listed in Methodology and Sources.
July peaked at 13,878,389 visits; January had 2,975,414 (July was 4.66 times January). June-August contributed 38,801,003 visits (41.33%). This seasonal total reconciles exactly to the annual 63-park sum of 93,892,121.
Seasonality exception: Great Smoky Mountains
Across all 63 parks, July ranked first. At Great Smoky Mountains, October had 1,561,683 visits, exceeding July's 1,435,337 by 126,346. The park's June-August visits were 3,769,537, or 32.70% of its annual total, compared with 41.33% across all national parks. Thus, the summer share at the busiest individual park was 8.63 percentage points lower than the national-park aggregate.
Methodology: What was counted and calculated
We rank recreation visits in calendar year 2025 as reported by NPS Visitor Use Statistics for the 63 units designated national parks during 2025. All rows use the same metric, unit, and target year. The 2024 values are official published comparators, not projections. Chiricahua became the 64th national park on October 20, 2026, after the 2025 measurement year, and is deliberately excluded from this historical cohort. NPS released its 2025 results on March 13, 2026; sources were reviewed October 29, 2026.
Measure, source, and direction
NPS recreation visits, counted in visits per calendar year. NPS IRMA is the sole official numeric publisher of the annual park-ranking data. Raw park-level totals are sorted descending and displayed as whole visits without rounding. The separate all-park monthly aggregate has Chartly as its explicitly credited secondary publisher.
Eligibility and coverage
The denominator is exactly 63 parks designated as national parks in 2025, including units officially named National Park and Preserve and the National Park of American Samoa. Excluded: 2025 national monuments (including Chiricahua), national recreation areas, parkways, memorials and other NPS types. Chiricahua's October 2026 redesignation does not retroactively change this 2025 cohort. The 63-park total is not the system-wide NPS total.
Observation and status rules
Each 2025 and 2024 annual visit total is official_value as published by NPS. That status means published by the government agency, not a perfect headcount. No modeled 2025 counts, forecasts, interpolated years, or imputed missing entries are used.
Calculated trends, not NPS forecasts
YoY % = (2025 visits − 2024 visits) / 2024 visits × 100. Rank movement = 2024 rank − 2025 rank. Inputs: the two official annual totals for the same park; all 63 parks are ranked separately within each year. YoY rounded to one decimal in tables; ranking uses raw visit counts.
Concentration and summer share
Top-N share = sum of the N highest 2025 park values / 93,892,121 × 100. Summer share = (June + July + August 2025 recreation visits) / 2025 annual visits × 100. Percentages rounded to two decimals; denominator is only the 63 national parks, not every NPS site.
Monthly source and reconciliation
Published 12-month total: Chartly's NPS-derived 2025 aggregate of the 63 national parks (secondary numeric compilation, not an independent official source). This page did not independently extract and sum all 756 park-month observations from NPS files. The 12 cited totals add to 93,892,121, the official aggregate obtained by summing the 63 park annual values. Direct reproduction from NPS: download the official 2025 Main_Data.csv, select Total Recreation Visits (TRV), calendar year 2025, and exactly the 63 units in this ranking; group by reporting month and sum. For Great Smoky Mountains, the 12 NPS park-specific 2025 monthly values were checked directly against the NPS IRMA GRSM report; denominator 11,527,939.
Region categories
For analytical comparison, parks are grouped as West, South, Midwest, Northeast, Alaska, Hawaii, or Territories based on their locations. These are StatRanker grouping labels, not an official NPS region taxonomy. Multi-state parks appear only once in the ranking.
Data quality and limitations
NPS park-level counting procedures may change; estimates can involve traffic counters, visitor counts, multipliers and other methods. Current-year preliminary values may be edited until finalization; after a calendar year is finalized, NPS does not change the underlying values. The annual Statistical Abstract can document permanent errors in endnotes. NPS reported a 43-day partial government shutdown in 2025; these ranking totals alone cannot quantify its effects for any particular park. Annual changes do not measure unique visitors, visitor demand alone, congestion or ecological impact. For Petrified Forest, the NPS-derived October 2025 monthly series reports 0 visits; a reported zero can reflect limitations in measurement or access and must not automatically be interpreted as zero actual visitors. No substitute or imputed value has been inserted into the official annual ranking.
Provenance and status: Every individual park's 2025 and 2024 annual recreation visits is an NPS-published official_value. StatRanker-derived calculated_value fields include percentage changes, rank shifts, regional totals and annual concentration shares (inputs: those official park-year values). The all-parks monthly chart instead uses Chartly's published NPS-derived 12-month aggregate as its secondary numeric source; StatRanker calculates summer share and month ratios from that series. Chartly is a separate publisher of aggregates, not a second independent government measurement of recreation visits. The Great Smoky Mountains monthly series was separately checked against the official NPS park report. No forecast or modeled value appears.

Four findings from the 2025 visitation data
Key Insight
The top ten account for 51.93% of visits: 48,756,659 of 93,892,121 total in 2025. Great Smoky Mountains (#1, 11,527,939) alone had 6,543,414 more visits than Zion (#2, 4,984,525). This is a share of the 63-park population, not of all 323 million NPS system visits.
Notable Pattern
36 parks rose and 27 declined in recorded visits from 2024 to 2025, while the 63-park combined total fell by 395,446 (-0.42%). Yellowstone moved from #4 to #3 despite growth of only +0.4%; Grand Canyon moved from #3 to #4 after -9.9%.
Regional / Source Concentration
West: 31 parks and 53,357,252 visits (56.83%). Alaska has 8 of the 63 parks but just 1,894,519 visits (2.02%). These are location-based StatRanker groupings, not NPS administrative regions. Numeric source: one NPS publishing organization.
Outlier: Redwood counting change
Redwood rose from #35 to #25: 622,883 to 1,202,480 visits (+93.1%, or +579,597). NPS explicitly attributes most of the reported jump to improved visitor-counting methods; it notes approximately 11% growth in alternative counter/contact indicators. The +93.1% series change cannot be treated as pure demand growth.
What these visitation rankings mean
Use the 2025 rankings to compare the annual number of recorded recreation visits at each national park. The rank is a volume measure, not a direct measure of park size, visitor satisfaction, crowding, conservation impact, economic value, or unique individuals. A small urban-accessible park and a large remote park can have radically different visitation patterns.
For trip planning, nationwide seasonal totals are not enough. The 63-park aggregate is busiest in July, yet the leading park, Great Smoky Mountains, reported an October peak. Monthly park-specific reports are more informative than assuming every national park follows the same summer schedule.
For trend analysis, read the exact 2024 and 2025 visit numbers alongside the calculated percentage and rank change. In particular, a change in park-level counting methodology can dominate recorded movement. Redwood shows why that change is not automatically evidence of equivalent tourist-demand growth. NPS also reported a 43-day partial government shutdown during 2025; no park-specific effect can be inferred from annual totals alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which U.S. national park was the most visited in 2025?
Great Smoky Mountains National Park ranked #1 with 11,527,939 NPS-reported recreation visits, ahead of Zion National Park at 4,984,525 and Yellowstone National Park at 4,762,988.
Why does the ranking have 63 parks when there are now 64?
This ranking freezes the national-park designation at calendar year 2025. Chiricahua was a national monument throughout 2025 and became the 64th national park on October 20, 2026. Its 2025 monument visits are not retroactively ranked as visits to a national park. The count of 63 is therefore an intentional historical scope, not an outdated current park count.
Does 323 million mean 323 million visits to national parks?
No. The National Park Service recorded 323,014,305 recreation visits across all reporting National Park System units in 2025. This ranking isolates the 63 units designated as national parks, which together recorded 93,892,121 visits.
Is a recreation visit one unique person?
No. It is an NPS recreation-visit count. A person returning on another day or making multiple qualifying visits can contribute more than one visit. The metric does not count distinct individuals.
Are the figures for 2025 or projections made in 2026?
They are official published NPS values for calendar year 2025, released in 2026. This is not a 2026 estimate or forecast. Every park row uses 2025 recreation visits and compares them with official 2024 values.
How are visitor growth percentages and changes in rank calculated?
StatRanker calculates YoY growth as (2025 visits minus 2024 visits) divided by 2024 visits, multiplied by 100. Rank movement equals the 2024 rank minus the 2025 rank, based on all 63 parks in each year. Both are calculations from observed NPS data and are not separate official forecasts.
Which month had the most national park visits in 2025?
July had 13,878,389 recreation visits in Chartly's published NPS-derived aggregate for the 63 parks. June-August combined had 38,801,003 visits (41.33% of the 63-park annual total, calculated by StatRanker). The NPS monthly report for Great Smoky Mountains separately confirms an October peak of 1,561,683. Chartly's exact 12-month aggregates were not independently reconstructed from NPS park-level CSV files for this page.
Does the high Redwood growth rate mean tourism nearly doubled?
Not necessarily. Its published annual recreation-visit count rose +93.1% year over year, but an NPS April 2026 statement says improved counting methods account for most of this change. The published series and a like-for-like demand trend are not equivalent.
Does this ranking show which parks are least crowded?
No. Lower annual visits are not automatically lower congestion, because physical area, access, capacity, peak dates, and route concentration differ. Check a park's specific monthly counts, entry rules, and management notices before making travel decisions.
Data sources and verification
The annual ranking has one official numeric publishing organization: NPS. A second publisher, Chartly, provides the already-aggregated 12-month series used for the separate seasonal chart; it republishes derived NPS numbers, not independent NPS measurements. The official NPS downloadable package permits a direct reproduction check. Other records below are distinctly labeled as validation, methodology or context sources.
