U.S. Trade Balance and the Dollar Exchange Rate, 2020–2025
U.S. Trade Deficit and the Dollar Exchange Rate: Evidence from 2020–2025
Direct answer: the 2020–2025 monthly data do not show a stable relationship strong enough to use the U.S. trade deficit as a standalone predictor of the dollar. The correlation between monthly changes was 0.14, with a p-value of 0.259; the 95% confidence interval includes zero. Interest-rate expectations, financial flows, risk demand and global growth were more important for short-term dollar movements.
The ranked metric is the monthly U.S. goods-and-services trade deficit in current dollars. It is compared with the Federal Reserve Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index, where higher values indicate appreciation. Coverage includes 72 official monthly observations from January 2020 through December 2025.
The numeric dataset combines two official monthly series. Four additional official and research sources support annual revision checks and interpretation. Data checked July 29, 2026; BEA/Census trade series updated July 7, 2026 after the June 2026 annual revision; Federal Reserve index vintage July 1, 2026.
Mar 2025; revised official trade data.
Oct 2025; still a deficit, not a surplus.
January 2020 through December 2025, without missing months.
71 pairs; p = 0.259; weak and not statistically significant.
The interval includes zero, so the sample does not establish a reliable same-month relationship.

Overview: annual trade gaps and the dollar followed different paths
The annual goods-and-services deficit rose from $637.1 billion in 2020 to $902.9 billion in 2022, narrowed in 2023, and widened again in 2024 and 2025. The revised 2025 total is $932.0 billion.
The broad dollar index did not mirror that sequence. Its annual average fell in 2021, rose sharply in 2022, changed little in 2023, strengthened in 2024 and eased slightly in 2025. This divergence is consistent with exchange rates being asset prices influenced by expected interest-rate differentials, portfolio demand, safe-haven flows and relative growth, not only by current trade flows.
The level correlation is 0.32, but trending levels can produce misleading associations. The more defensible comparison uses monthly changes: r = 0.14, p = 0.259, 95% CI -0.10 to 0.36. This is descriptive evidence, not a causal estimate.

| 2025 | $932.0B | 122.7598 | +5.3% | -0.1% |
Annual deficit equals the sum of the 12 revised monthly BEA/Census balances. Annual dollar index equals the mean of the 12 Federal Reserve monthly observations.
Top 10 months with the largest U.S. trade deficits
The three largest monthly deficits occurred in the first quarter of 2025. That cluster should be read as a period-specific trade shock rather than evidence that the deficit mechanically determined the dollar. The dollar index declined across those three months even as the deficit remained unusually large.

Rank is calculated from the absolute value of the revised monthly balance. All rows are official observations; no forecasts or projections are included.
Chart: 20 largest monthly deficits and the dollar index
Blue bars show deficit magnitude. The green value reports the same month’s nominal broad dollar index. The wide range of index values across similarly large deficits is one reason the trade balance should not be treated as a short-term exchange-rate signal by itself.
Methodology
Trade metric
Monthly U.S. exports minus imports of goods and services on a balance-of-payments basis, seasonally adjusted, in current U.S. dollars. Negative values are deficits.
Ranking direction
The ranking uses deficit magnitude, so a more negative balance ranks higher after conversion to a positive absolute value in billions.
Exchange-rate measure
Federal Reserve Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index, monthly, not seasonally adjusted, January 2006 = 100. Higher values indicate dollar appreciation.
Coverage and status
72 monthly observations from January 2020 through December 2025. Every row is an official value; there are no forecasts, projections or missing months.
Current data vintage
Trade data use the series updated July 7, 2026 after the June 2026 annual revision. The February 2026 historical file is not used.
Source separation
Two official series supply numeric rows. Other official and research sources are used only for definitions, revision context and interpretation.
Primary test. Pearson correlation compares the month-to-month change in deficit magnitude with the same month’s percentage change in the dollar index. The first observation is lost to differencing, leaving 71 pairs. The test yields r = 0.136, p = 0.259, with a 95% Fisher confidence interval of -0.101 to 0.358.
Lag sensitivity. The table below compares a change in the deficit with dollar returns in the same month and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months later. These are simple bivariate checks, not structural estimates.
| Test | Correlation | Pairs | p-value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same month | 0.136 | 71 | 0.259 | Not statistically significant at 5% |
| 1-month lead | 0.012 | 70 | 0.921 | Not statistically significant at 5% |
| 3-month lead | -0.152 | 68 | 0.216 | Not statistically significant at 5% |
| 6-month lead | 0.014 | 65 | 0.914 | Not statistically significant at 5% |
| 12-month lead | 0.024 | 59 | 0.855 | Not statistically significant at 5% |
No control variables are included. The analysis does not isolate monetary policy, fiscal policy, commodity prices, tariffs, risk sentiment, relative growth or financial flows.
What the metric does not measure. The goods-and-services trade balance is not the same as the current-account balance. A current-account deficit is matched by financial-account flows and statistical adjustments; the trade balance is only one component of the current account.
Limits. Current-dollar trade values combine price and quantity effects. Exchange-rate pass-through can be incomplete and delayed. Seasonally adjusted trade data are paired with a non-seasonally adjusted exchange-rate index. Correlation does not determine direction of influence.

Insights from the revised 2020–2025 dataset
Key insight
Monthly changes in the trade deficit and dollar index had a weak same-month correlation of 0.14. The confidence interval includes zero, so the dataset does not support a dependable short-term signal.
Notable pattern
The deficit reached its three largest monthly values in January–March 2025, while the dollar index declined from 128.8369 to 126.2430 across the same quarter.
Time concentration
The Top 20 are concentrated in 2021, 2022, late 2024 and 2025. This indicates distinct episodes rather than a uniform six-year trend.
Outlier
October 2025 had the smallest deficit at $37.376 billion, less than one-third of the March 2025 maximum.
What the relationship means—and what it does not mean
A wider trade deficit can increase net demand for foreign currency when U.S. residents purchase more foreign goods and services. A stronger dollar can also make imports cheaper and U.S. exports more expensive, potentially widening the deficit after contractual and demand lags. Both directions are economically plausible.
The observed monthly relationship is weak because the dollar is traded as a financial asset. Interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, global risk aversion, portfolio rebalancing and relative growth can move the exchange rate faster than trade quantities adjust.
The ranking should therefore be read as a transparent record of monthly deficit size alongside the contemporaneous dollar index. It does not estimate how many index points the dollar would gain or lose from a specified change in the trade balance.

Did a larger U.S. trade deficit weaken the dollar from 2020 to 2025?
Not consistently in the monthly data. The same-month correlation between changes was weak and not statistically significant, and simple lead tests did not establish a stable predictive relationship.
Why can the dollar strengthen while the trade deficit widens?
Higher U.S. interest rates, stronger relative growth, safe-haven demand and capital inflows can support the dollar even when imports exceed exports.
Does the table measure causal impact?
No. It compares two official series and reports descriptive correlations. A causal estimate would require a model that identifies separate trade, monetary, fiscal and financial shocks.
Is the trade balance the same as the current account?
No. The current account also includes primary income and secondary income. The goods-and-services balance is an important component but not the entire account.
Why were the earlier 2025 values changed?
BEA and the Census Bureau published their annual revision on June 9, 2026. Goods data were revised from 2021 and services data from 1999 using updated source data, seasonal factors and methodological improvements.
What does a higher dollar index mean?
A higher Federal Reserve Nominal Broad U.S. Dollar Index indicates appreciation of the dollar against a broad trade-weighted group of currencies.
